What's important when shopping for outdoor speakers?

You're going to need to assess whether you want powered speakers, or speakers that hook up to a receiver. After that, the next most important thing is bass, as sound outdoors is much different than indoor conditions. I would check out this guide:

The biggest problem I see (hear, actually) with outdoor speakers, especially at people's homes, is the sound quality. Finding outdoor speakers is not hard. But getting a speaker setup that sounds good is difficult because most people do not take into account the differences between speakers inside and outside. Inside, you have a smaller space, sound from the speakers can fill the room (making it sound loud), you can can adjust the sound adequately, and walls and ceiling help the sound feel fuller by vibrating very very slightly with bass delivery. But outside - different story. There are no walls or ceiling, and speakers no longer have the contained space to help them feel "warm" which means room-filling with a thick range of presence from treble to bass. Outdoor speakers tend to lack sufficient bass to sound great. And with no bass or mid-range, they sound even worse because there then seems to be far too much treble. Which there isn't...there's just no low end to accompany the high.

Also keep placement in mind. I prefer outdoors speakers to be near the ground. That allows for larger speakers (since large speakers may be hard to mount up high, or may look ugly) and more bass to battle the no-walls problem. On a side note, I'm tall and have come to realize that outdoor speakers, say mounted under the roof of a covered patio, are too close to my head for enjoyable listening. You also want to avoid putting speakers in the exact same spot where people will gather, since they may have to compete with the volume of the music. Place the speakers nearby instead.

As the other answer advises, check that Crutchfield guide. Crutchfield was my first thought on advice for this. Good luck.
