Stuff We Like
Has another year gone by already? If there's one thing I wish I could save more of, it's time, not money.
But until scientists figure out how to do that, money it is!
Of course, there is one way to turn back the clock, in a manner of speaking. Today I'm pausing to reflect on 2011 and pick my favorite gadgets of the year. What's on the list? You may be surprised by some of my choices. (Hint: There's not a single Apple product.)

Product Review
The word "game-changer" gets thrown around a lot, but that's exactly what the
Amazon Kindle Fire is. Not because it's especially innovative--7-inch color tablets are nothing new--but because it's cheap. As you probably heard yesterday following its introduction, Amazon has priced the Fire at $199.

Spotlight Deals
Daily-deal offers are all the rage now, what with sites like Groupon, LivingSocial, and, one of my personal favorites,
Giveaway of the Day.
Amazon is no stranger to this concept, having offered its daily "Gold Box" bargains for some time.
Now, the company is extending this daily-deal love to Kindle owners: the
Kindle Daily Deal offers one e-book per day at a heavily discounted price.

Product Review
As you may know, the awesome
Barnes & Noble Nook Color e-reader (
which is still available refurbished for $199, a deal too good to pass up) now
offers some tablet-like features--most notably Flash support and access to select Android apps.
But it's far from a bona fide Android tablet. If you want to transform it into one, you can--but that involves "rooting" the device, a scary and complex proposition for most users, and a warranty-violating one at that.
