These past few months, I've been obsessing over shoes. Although winters in Southern California aren't exactly known for extreme temperatures, I get excited for anything resembling cooler weather. Starting in September, my collection of boots come out of their hiding places. Flat boots, heeled boots, tan boots, black boots, studded boots, and zip up leather boots. It's nothing short of a love affair when I slip them over my skinny jeans.

While I never quite get the chance to escape traffic in LA, I'm already worried about what holiday traffic will mean this weekend. With Labor Day on Monday, there's no better time to step away and take a break from your normal workweek. The laundry can wait, and you don't need to spend all day slaving in the kitchen. Now, where's the beach bag? If you're headed to the ocean, I'd recommend getting there early this weekend. Follow the locals, and don't be afraid to walk a bit. The beach is often super crowded right near the parking lot for a reason.
If you're headed to a cookout, don your favorite floppy hat and sundress. This weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, and it's time to peel back the winter layers. However, I'd recommend slathering on the sunscreen, especially if this is first time your legs have seen sunlight in months. And if you're rocking a faux glow, remember- that spray tan isn't going to save you from skin damage. Read More »
If you've somehow managed to avoid the news this week, not to worry; I'm about to bring you up to speed on the top three items that crossed my radar faster than you can say "Twenty-four hour news cycle". The Internet has been buzzing since Facebook's announced in January that they would go public. As of this morning, it's officially listed on NASDAQ and debuted as the third-largest IPO in history.
Meanwhile, the LA Times reported that coffee has been linked to a lower risk of death. As a huge fan of coffee, I was thrilled to see this headline. Upon further reading though, I realized that this referred to folks who drank six or more cups of coffee a day. So much for my morning latte making a difference. Yesterday, legendary pop singer Donna Summers passed away from cancer at her home in Florida. Over the span of her career, she had 32 singles that charted in the Hot 100. If you're going out this weekend, throw on "Last Dance", and save this one for Donna.

Happy National Pet Month! The Savings crew loves pets, and we always have a few of our furry friends scampering around the office. There's something nice about being able to take a break by playing a game of catch with one of the dogs.
Owning a pet has shown to have a number of benefits- with pet owners generally getting more exercise than their pet-less peers, and helping to ease feelings of lonliness by providing companionship. However, buying a pet can cause a strain on the wallet, especially if you don't take measures to budget your spending. PetFinder.com estimates that the first year of owning a small dog will cost nearly $800, and that number jumps to $1500, when you're talking about a large breed.

I'm no fashionista- my wardrobe is typically some variation of a nice blouse with pants tucked into boots- or a belted skirt and cardigan. My hair? That's something else entirely. All my life, I've had to deal with frizzy, curly hair, trying to whip it into something manageable and slightly presentable. Regardless of my outfit choice of the day, if my hair looks good, I'm likely to be in a similar mood.
I'll admit it- I've tortured my hair in the past. A natural brunette, I've endured bi-monthly bleaching sessions at the salon for months, to make my coif a platinum blonde. There's only so much your hair can take before it rebels though, so I went back to brunette, where I battled frizz with flat irons and finally underwent a Brazilian Blowout. For only $300, I had sleek hair for three months. For those of you not familiar with this treatment, the stylist applies a chemical to your hair before sealing it with heat. The Brazilian Blowout removes all frizz, so your hair looks stick straight after drying. Of course, you're literally bathing your hair in chemicals, and recently it has come to light that the treatment contains formaldehyde (the cancer-causing ingredient used as a preserving agent). No thanks. Read More »

We apologize for the bump in the road last week. Even though SaveUp was last weekend, we're still in a daze from all the excitement around the office. Last time we held a giveaway on the blog, it was for a free discount dental plan and a $100 gift card to Stella & Dot, courtesy of our friends over at DentalPlans.com.
Since we had this little hiccup, we're extending the contest! You have until next Friday to leave us a comment on this post telling us why you should be chosen. As I mentioned before, this week has been a whirlwind. From the post-SaveUp wind-down and having all of our DealPros in office to gearing up for Crystal's SavingsNation couponing class in Atlanta, there's never a dull moment at Savings HQ. Saturday night, we donned our classiest cocktail attire and walked the red carpet.

Last week, you shared with pictures of your favorite pet on our Facebook page, for your chance to win a $50 gift card to Jeffer's Pet Supplies. We were overwhelmed with cute images and our heart skipped a beat for 21-year-old Buzz, who's blind and deaf (and looks like a giant stuffed animal).
Congratulations to Savings.com user and Facebook fan Lourdes Doyle, and her therapy dog, Leo. Leo may not have legs that work properly, but he's making a difference not only in his family's life, but also as a therapy dog.
Lourdes, I've sent you
each an email with instructions on how to claim your prize. If
for
some reason it doesn't reach you, send me an email at social@savings.com before the end of the
day on Tuesday, April 17th or another winner will be chosen.

Happy Good Friday! Are you lucky enough to be taking the day off from work, or simply catching up on loads on laundry? Whether you find yourself celebrating the bunnies and chocolate version of Easter, or are planning a feast after church, I think we can all agree that it's always nice to have a break to catch up with our families.
Last week, we had a doll from Paradise Gallery to
giveaway. We asked you to tell us who you would give the doll to, if you were chosen as the winner. Congratulations to Savings.com user april.skidgel, who said "These dolls are gorgeous [and] I would give it to my daughter because she is also gorgeous." We hope your little girl enjoys her new toy!
I've sent you
each an email with instructions on how to claim your prize. If
for
some reason it doesn't reach you, send me an email at social@savings.com before the end of the
day on Tuesday, April 10th or another winner will be chosen.
This week, we're giving you a chance to win a $50 gift card to Jeffer's Pet Supplies!
While there's many a "cat person" in our office, I'm partial to small fuzzy dogs (especially the little white guy in the above picture). Growing up, I had a small dachshund- yes, that's the wiener dog- who I was in love with. She had the sweetest disposition, and eyes that you simply couldn't say no to. Suffice to say, I considered her part of our family. Animals can have a huge impact on any person's life, as a companion.

This week has been all about dreams. The MegaMillions lottery keeps giving us record highs, and the current prize has reached $640 million. Offices are pooling their money to buy a stack of tickets, and coworkers are scheming about how to spend their potential winnings. Even though the odds are that you're more likely to get struck by lightning, we can't help but get caught up in the excitement. Whether it's cheering for Jeremy Lin, the unlikely NBA star from Harvard, or watching a reality show, we all look for an escape from our normal day to day routine.
Last week, we had a $50 gift card to Karmaloop to
giveaway. We asked you to tell us what small thing you do to calm your nerves before a big day. Congratulations to Savings.com user BarracudaRon, who said "Music soothes the beast". We couldn't agree more, and we recommend turning up the radio during your happy dance. I've sent you each an email with instructions on how to claim your prize. If
for
some reason it doesn't reach you, send me an email at social@savings.com before the end of the
day on Tuesday, April 3rd or another winner will be chosen.

What: Savings.com
is hosting a Hack Your Frozen Food contest in honor of March being
National Frozen Foods month! We're asking innovative food
bloggers to do what they do best: get creative! We want blogging foodies

with an interesting twist. Each participant must use at least one of the
ingredients that we have listed in our grocery section, but their "hacked" dish can include any other items they choose! Some of our current offerings are listed below:
Once a recipe has been
created, bloggers will submit it to Savings.com via social@savings.com. You
can submit recipes from now until Friday, April 13th. After we've sifted through your recipes, we'll post a poll right here on the blog, so you can vote on your favorite!
Additionally, each blogger should post their recipe to their blog, and include links to this post, as well as the voting poll.
