Five free home-page alternatives that will brighten your day

When you fire up your Web browser, what's the first thing you see? Unless you've modified the default home page, chances are good it's MSN, Yahoo, or some other news-oriented site. I don't know about you, but the headlines I typically see make me want to dive under the covers and stay there.

Seriously, do you really want to be slapped in the face with all that negativity, all that bad news, every time you open your browser? I certainly don't, which is why I've changed my home page to something far more positive.

Yes, you can do that. I'm always surprised at how many people never bother to choose a new home page, perhaps because they think that's the way the computer was set up, and that's how it has to stay. Nuh-uh. You can set your home page to Facebook, Twitter, Fluffy Kittens on Tumblr, or whatever you like. Read More »

Comedy Central app streams full episodes for free

It may be April 1, but this is no joke: Comedy Central's new iOS app lets you watch full-length episodes of "The Daily Show," "Key & Peele," "South Park," and more--all for free.

@#!$ yeah!

Before this, various Comedy Central shows had their own apps, but most of them (like The Colbert Report's) let you watch only clips. Now you can see the latest episodes of over a dozen shows, in their entirety, the day after they air.

In other words, at long last, you can stream last night's "Daily Show" on the train ride to work. In your face, boredom! (Just try to keep the laughter down. Some of us have work to do.)

Getty Images thinks giving away free photos will make them tons of money. They're probably right

If you're a blogger, you know the value of putting an eye-catching image at the top of every post. Wait, let me rephrase that: Are you a blogger who doesn't put an image at the top of every post? Stop it. Stop being so boring. The internet hates you. Now that Getty is giving millions of images away for free, you have no excuse to do that. Particularly not when they're being this liberal with their terms of use, according to GeekWire (emphasis mine):

"[...]f the use promotes a company, product or service, the users will need to purchase a license. If not, they can use the embedded content so long as they are happy to use it in the embed frame and functionality.

The presence of ads on a site doesn't automatically make use of an embedded image on that site a commercial use. Think about sites like or any online newspapers or magazines which support editorial content with site ads. The key attribute in classifying use as commercial is whether the image is used to promote a business, goods or services, or to advertise something. If not, it is a non-commercial use. Likewise, corporate blogs would be treated as editorial/non-commercial unless the image is directly being used to sell or promote their products or services." Read More »

First things first: Are you a card-carrying member of your local library? (What? You're not? Did you know they'll let you take home all the books you want for free? Seriously,go grab yourself something to read. I'm about a quarter into Khaled Hosseini's "And the Mountains Echoed," and it's just outstanding. Or if you want something a little easier to digest, I couldn't put down last year's "Gone Girl." Did I mention you can get these andother books for free?)

Where was I? Oh, right: Are you a card-carrying member of your local library? Then you should know about Freegal Music, a site that partners with libraries to provide free MP3 downloads. Read More »

Avoid road-trip food disasters with this newly free app

An incredibly sad true story: During a recent road trip, I was cruising along the Interstate, starving for some lunch, when I came to an exit promising "food" in the form of Arby's.

The horror, the horror.

But what choice did I have? The next exit might be 20-30 miles, and who knew if the pickings would be any better? So I stopped. I ate. And then I hit the road again.

Now for the sad part: Just five miles later, I spotted a Panera Bread. And a Chik-Fil-A! Oh, wretched fate. Read More »

Get a free digital copy of Pixar's "The Incredibles"

You don't often see the words "Disney" and "free" in the same sentence. More often it's "Disney" and "price hike," like yesterday when the company announced plans to raise Disney World ticket prices to $99.

Guess that's how they can afford this giveaway. (What, me bitter?)

Today, Disney announced its new Movies Anywhere service, which provides access to a library of over 400 Disney, Pixar, and Marvel flicks--really, really good stuff like "The Avengers," "Frozen," and "Up."

More on that in a bit. For now, the important news: You can get a free digital copy of "The Incredibles" when you create a Disney account and link it to your iTunes account. And it's the best kind of free: no hassles, no strings attached. (Well, okay, the "string" is the need to have an iTunes account. Is there anyone out there who doesn't?) Read More »

Target is offering free credit monitoring for one year to anyone who has shopped at a store located in the USA. It turns out that the data breach was larger than they thought and the hackers were able to breach two different databases.

If you shopped online and you stored your credit card info, you're accounts may also have been affected. So even if you didn't shop at Target over the holidays, your account(s) may still have been compromised. So thanks to those hackers, we are all now gifted with credit monitoring, possibly a blessing in disguise? Sign up below for free.

How to dip your toe into the wonderful world of cloud storage--for free

You. Yeah, you. I know what you're thinking. "I don't need this whole cloud thing. It's too confusing. And, anyway, nothing bad will ever happen to my data."

That's some serious denial you've got going on there, kid.

For starters, data loss isn't a matter of "if"--it's a matter of "when." And occasionally copying important files to a backup drive won't do you a lick of good if a virus chews through your system or a fire/tornado/hurricane takes out your house. Oh, and don't forget theft. Burglars love to make off with laptops and the hard drives connected to them. (Sorry for the scare tactics, but it's time for some tough love!)

As for confusing, I agree that some cloud services are an unitutive mess. But there's one I find admirably easy to use, and it's more versatile than most. Read More »
