Valentine's Day is just around the corner, which of course means that
blogs must fill their quotas of Valentine's Day posts. There's nothing
wrong with that. It also means that money-saving blogs must get their
yearly Valentine's Day money-saving ideas out of the way. The problem is
that the basics of how to have a frugal Valentine's Day aren't terribly
mysterious. And, in the never-ending quest to produce original content,
some otherwise good blogs wind up posting some bad tips.

Money Saving Tips
Valentine's Day is exactly a week away, and you know what
that means…
….Red and pink decorations have overtaken the stores for
weeks now, and you've been eyeing those boxes of chocolate strategically placed
next to the check-out counter at Vons. I haven't been able to turn on the TV lately,
without catching a trailer for the newest rom-com. Holidays are being promoted
earlier, as stores spotlight their sales, and I can't be alone in thinking that
the past few months have seemed like an endless holiday, as
Thanksgiving-Christmas-New Years have melted into one ongoing event.

Holiday season isn't over
just yet. We still have one more thing to celebrate: the Super Bowl! It may not
be as formal as your other holiday parties, but did you know that last year
Americans spent $118 on average to host a Super Bowl Party? Here are a few tips
for keeping the cost down while you cheer on your favorite team.

Image by Jason Staten via FlickrThe key to making sure food doesn't go to waste after a big meal is planning. When you're creating the menu for Christmas dinner, you should also create a meal plan for the leftovers. Typically, if you are preparing a whole turkey, roast beef, or ham, you can expect that you won't eat all of it--and you'll need to eat it relatively quickly for safety reasons.
Turkey and roast beef last about two or three days, and ham will save for four or five days. Don't think you'll use them fast enough? Pack them up in smaller batches and freeze them for later in the year.
Read on for other ideas on making the most of your holiday dinner leftovers:

So I must admit, I am that idiot. But in my defense I spent a week in Europe at the end of November, then was racing cars the first weekend of December, so the holiday shopping season kind of got away from me.
As did all my shopping money.

Still looking for a few Christmas gifts? These eco-friendly
stocking stuffers make great last-minute additions. You have just a
few more days left to order them online, and you can also find
these items--or something very similar--in many local stores. If
you need a large stand-alone gift, just rescue a pretty basket from
your local thrift store, add your favorite items from our gift
list, and top it all off with a bow.

If you don't know what a White Elephant exchange is, you may
(
or may not) be missing out. The tradition, designed
as a sort of "musical chairs" for Christmas gifts, has been a topic
of holiday comedy sketches for decades and can be a fun and frugal
way to gift to office colleagues, extended family members, or any
group that appreciates a little holiday humor.
Sadly, many people miss the point of the practice, stressing out
about what gift to bring, and spending way more than they
should. (
And since it's possible to end up with a really
bad gift, overspending can make for a very uneven
exchange.)
Here are some quick and tested tips for getting the most out of
that white elephant gift, regardless of the crowd you'll be
partying with.

Are you
raising a left-handed child? No worries. With approximately 10% of the population being left-handed (
including President Obama and many former presidents), more and more products are being made to accommodate the needs of left-handed individuals.
Back when I was growing up, there was maybe one kid in my class every year that was left-handed. I distinctly remember that they were encouraged to write with their right hands. To my knowledge, there weren't any left-handed products to meet their needs, so they really had no other options but to use their right hands.
With a lot of
research being done on left-handedness, more companies are seeing that there is a demand for left-handed products. If you go to
Amazon and search "
left-handed," everything from knives to guitars show up on the list.
If your looking to buy a gift for a left-handed child this holiday season, I have five gift ideas for you:

I don't mind if my kids play
video games, but I have two rules: no more than 30 minutes per day, and nothing with blood, guts, guns, and other violent images.
That leaves out a lot of the most popular releases, like Battlefield 3, Call of Duty: Medal of Honor 3, and even
Batman: Arkham City. If you're a parent like me, that can create something of a quandary this holiday season: The kids have outgrown the educational stuff, but you'd rather not expose them to all that realistically-rendered brutality.
Fortunately, alternatives exist. If you want to give the kids something new for the
Xbox,
PlayStation or
Wii, you can choose from dozens of fun-filled titles that haven't a trace of violence, gore or adult themes.

It's almost that time of year where adults turn into Santa and small children get so excited they
drive everyone around them crazy. There are some freebies out there already to help make the
season less expensive.
The kids can have a great time with free crafts and games at
Bass Pro
Shops then get a free picture with Santa before you leave. There are two ways to send a letter
to Santa--that's right, it looks like Santa has an email address. The kids will love the free printables
they can color to help decorate the house.
JCPenney is offering a free snow globe to customers
on Black Friday--make sure you get there early, these go quickly!

The holidays are rapidly approaching and not only does that mean
spending time with family and leaving milk and cookies out for
Santa, but, for many of us, it also creates angst over budgeting
and making ends meet. The holiday season is the biggest
retail period of the year, and, according to American Express,
Americans will spend an average of $831 on gifts this year--17%
more than in 2010.
Luckily, there are a number of ways for the savviest consumers to
save, and, for those with excellent credit, the right credit card
can help you save up to $500.
