It's a fact: if you've got water gushing and flooding your kitchen, you'll find the main valve and shut it off immediately. But a leaky faucet could be left to drip for months on end with that tiny trickle of water adding up to gallons and gallons of wasted water over the course of time.

The same applies to expenditures: it's easy to focus on the big ticket items when trying to balance your personal finances, but often it's that trickle of expenses that adds up to big bucks in the long run.

Here are ten money wasters to stop spending your hard-earned dollars on: Read More »

You know those beauty myths that magazines love to bust? Why do they always take such delight in debunking "shaving your legs will make hair grow in thicker" or "tanning will help clear up skin"…year after year? After a certain point, we've gotten the message. Yes, the only way to reduce cellulite is through exercise and we're stuck with the size of our pores.

And what about rules for cosmetics? This realm is less easily pinned down, because it's so individual--your friend looks stunning with gold eyeshadow, but it makes you look jaundiced. It's no wonder then that some people cling to the few hard and fast rules they hear--but we pride ourselves on being savvy consumers, so here's a rundown of knowledge you can take to the bank. Buying in bulk from warehouse stores like Costco and Sam's Club can save you lots of money. For example, one brand of maple syrup is going for $5.32 per quart at the local supermarket and only $1.49 per quart at a warehouse store. The problem, of course, is to make use of it all before it spoils, but by implementing a few techniques, you can make bulk buying work for you! Read More »

As the new legislation for college students allowing the textbook search to be more competitive and provide sales of textbooks online took effect in July there has been a change in national book retail stores across the country. Nothing can ruin your day quicker then car trouble. You can avoid many problems, or at the very least catch them before they leave you stranded, through preventative maintenance. You may save $20 getting your oil changed at the quick change chain, but they won't spot problems about to leave you sitting at the side of the road. Having a regular mechanic, who sees your car on a regular basis, is just as important as having a dentist look at your teeth regularly, or a doctor take your vital statistics when you get a check-up. If you don't have one, I have some good suggestions for finding a good mechanic.

The one problem you can't prevent is the sudden unexpected flat tire.  Tires have gotten so much better and more durable in the past 50 years, they hardly ever blow out.  But they can still be flattened by a common 6 penny nail or a drywall screw in a matter of seconds. Read More »
