Getting the best value isn't just about finding the lowest price tag. There are lots of hidden costs behind everything you buy--including the energy, water and chemicals used in the manufacturing process, the environmental impact of shipping products or running company offices and, in some cases, the labor conditions as well.

Last week, I warned you about the dangers of greenwashing. While promises to go green don't always translate into actual practice, I found five big companies that are taking encouraging steps a little closer toward their eco-friendly goals. Read More »

Earlier in the week, the blogosphere went nuts over Blowfish, the first ever FDA-approved hangover cure. Just drop a couple of these tablets in a glass of water, let it fizz like Alka-Seltzer, and soon your headache, nausea and profound self-loathing will be nothing more than a memory. Read More »

It's a common argument in many households: "Let's dump the cable subscription and save $80-150 per month." I raise the prospect every year or so with my husband, but we haven't made the leap yet.

With the news this week from Microsoft launching improved usability, streaming video options and live TV through the Xbox 360 console, we're one step closer to that goal. Read More »

eBay Motors and 4 Reasons You Won't Get Rich from Class Action Litigation

Today I received a settlement check.  It came in a regular envelope and was addressed to me.  I don't remember filling anything out, but I was informed by the letter inside that I was named as part of the class in a recent lawsuit against eBay Motors.  The check was for $0.49--barely covering the cost of postage, and most definitely not covering the cost of printing.

This is typical of many of these types of consumer actions, and here is why you likely won't be much better off after receiving a settlement from a future lawsuit: Read More »

When a company tries to pass a somewhat green product off as truly eco-friendly, it's known as "greenwashing." Sometimes greenwashers also advertise eco-friendly products for the sake of appearance, as opposed to any actual earth-friendly motivation.

Here's how to tell when companies are more concerned about looking green than actually being green:

Regardless how you feel about the Occupy movement, this week's raid on the Occupy L.A. encampment was remarkable for at least one reason: with the L.A.P.D's restriction on media coverage, the best news sources for updates on the standoff came from citizen journalists.  Read More »

Earlier in the week, the Journal of Consumer Research released a study that showed consumers tend to spend more when buying with credit cards than they do when using cash. Unintentionally hilarious photo courtesy of Backify's Web site

About a month ago I told you about Backify, a new Web service offering a whopping 512 gigabytes of cloud storage absolutely free.

It sounded too good to be true, especially considering that established services like Dropbox and SugarSync limit their freebie accounts to 2GB and 5GB, respectively. Even Microsoft's Windows Live SkyDrive tops out at a comparatively anemic 25GB. Read More »
