Image courtesy of DieselDemon via Flickr.Kelly Callahan obtains much of her produce in an unusual way: she
picks fruit from the yards of foreclosed homes
in her neighborhood. Callahan lives in Atlanta, which has the
16th-highest foreclosure rate in the U.S. On any given street in her
neighborhood, it's common to see several foreclosed homes--and
difficult not to notice the abundance of fruit growing on the trees outside of them.

If you've been thinking about buying a
smartphone but don't want to get locked into a two-year contract--or pay a minimum of $60 per month for voice and data--your best option is a prepaid phone. Alas, until recently, there were very few models to choose from, and those were mostly on the low-end, underpowered side.
That all changes with the Virgin Mobile
Motorola Triumph, an
Android-powered prepaid
smartphone that's anything but entry-level. It's on the pricey side at $299.99, but you stand to save big in the long run.

Today, even with a debt limit deal and the plan to sic "Super Congress" on the deficit, the Dow Jones Industrial Average took a nearly 650 point nose dive. News that bad leads one to consider the old wisdom of "tending your own garden"--in my case literally. If you have been following along,
I garden partially as practice for the end of the world as we know it. When the stock market acts like it has the past two days, it seems like more than just some nightmarish fantasy.
Thankfully, the
Rapitest Mini Moisture Tester by Luster Leaf makes tending your garden a whole lot easier.

This could potentially be a long story. I typically talk with my hands, so be glad that this is not a video or you would be cracking up at me.
My husband and I have never been rolling in the dough. We have struggled with finances since we got married 11 years ago. We have had our ups and downs financially, especially with 3 kids in the house. This last year we have really been working even harder to pull ourselves out of that hole.

Don't you hate it when you have those "I don't know what to wear" moments? I've heard that when a woman says this, it can be translated as: "I need to go shopping!" or "I don't have anything NEW to wear!" As for men, this phrase can be interpreted as "I don't have any clean laundry!" Whichever may be true, it's always nice to have something nice to accommodate most wardrobes. An essential accessory is shoes!
Last week our friends at
Famous Footwear gave away a $50 gift card. This gift card offered the fashion flexibility to choose some kicks for your liking! We had over 230 entries and with the help of Random.org, we have selected our gift card giveaway winner.

Just recently, the British ASA
banned two makeup ads for being too "
airbrushed." One featured Julia Roberts for the Lancome Teint Miracle foundation, and the other Christy Turlington for Maybelline's The Eraser. The ASA chief executive stated that, "
Advertisers must be able to provide appropriate material to us to demonstrate what retouching they've done in the event we question them, and they mustn't mislead… L'Oreal [the company behind both brands] didn't provide us with that evidence..." Roberts refused to have any un-retouched photos of her released (
is it really that bad?).
We always wonder if our eyelashes, lips, skin are going to look as gorgeous as those we see in magazines or TV ads. The truth is they probably won't.
Beauty ads can no doubt be deceiving so I scoured through some magazines and tested out some of the products to see how well they match up with their ads:

Imagine this: You head out for a Saturday afternoon of fun in the sun, then come home to discover that thieves have broken into your home and made off with your stuff.
That's exactly what happened to my poor mother-in-law just a few weeks ago. Among other things, she lost two flat-screen TVs and two laptops.
Alas, there's no way for a TV to transmit its location to you and/or the police--to "phone home," as it were--but with the right software and service, a laptop can do exactly that.

I can't remember a time with more economic uncertainty than today. The unemployment rate has not fallen as predicted, there is talk that Social Security checks won't even be sent out next month, and our country is currently in debt up to its eyeballs.
Given all the fiscal turmoil, I decided that right now is a great time to set aside as much as I can for the future. Fortunately, I am still gainfully employed and I try to live frugally. But questions still constantly gnaw at the back of my mind: Am I saving enough for my retirement? Am I saving enough for my son's education?
So for my
Savings Pledge, I decided to do something more about my concerns. I'll outline for you my new goals and how I plan to go about achieving them.

Image by skpy via FlickrMy car doesn't have satellite radio or a CD player. It doesn't have cruise control or power locks and windows either. It used to have a sun roof that you could open, but the motor died in that at least 10 years back. And the odometer…it doesn't work either. It froze at the 90,000 mark while on vacation six years ago.

Frugal people sometimes miss the importance of the splurge. When you can buy three days worth of groceries for $5, a latte just seems like a poor investment. But if that latte becomes important enough, a frugal person will find somewhere else to squeeze out that $5.

Inspired by an article that P.J. O'Rourke (
the funniest conservative Republican ever) wrote for Rolling Stone magazine back in the 1990s, I decided to try my hand a balancing the federal budget. (
P.J.'s article is not online, but you can buy it as part of "Parliament of Whores" on Amazon or Google E-book)
What qualifications do I have for the job? Well, I own a calculator and have access to the internet--but most importantly all my Republican friends think I am a bleeding heart socialist and my Democrat friend think I am some sort of neo-con. Lacking any dogmatic allegiance I am free to step on everyone's toes and swing at sacred cows as if they were pinatas full of candy.
Here goes nothing...

It seems that saving money has become as easy as standing at a

only helps you get around, but also automatically connects you to
surrounding restaurants and retail locations. And with the release

available by AmEx Smart Offers API technology, the savings are
practically following you.
