Stuff We Like
Oh man, just a few hours after America drunkenly ushered in 2010! But now that we have, let's take a look back at nine of the best savings stories I've picked out to honor the year that was 2009.
My Five Most Useful Savings StoriesSmartMoney:
10 Things Your Airline Won't Tell You (June 17) - Depressing as it is, I thought this article gave some great insights into the inefficiencies that plague our lovely commercial airline industry. The moral of the story, I guess, is to always book early and choose airlines that minimize hidden fees.
Budgets Are $exy:
Control Lifestyle Inflation Before It Controls You (July 7) - I hadn't seen this one before, but it turns out I'm the poster child for lifestyle inflation. I've been working at Savings for over seven months, and I'm JUST starting to save some money instead of single-handedly keeping the economy afloat with my superfluous purchases. Guess what one of my New Year's resolutions is?
Get Rich Slowly:
5 Ways To Rescue Your Rotten Resume (September 21) - You'll find some great resume advice in this article. Start by matching your skills to the employer's requirements, then add action words and keywords, choose the right format, and get rid of those "rotten resume words."
WiseBread:
3 Ways Paying Off Credit Cards Is Like Playing Beer Pong (October 22) - Finally some financial advice that speaks my language! It sounds like the author prefers 6-cup over 10-cup, which results in quicker games and, therefore, players getting drunk faster (assuming you pour the standard three cans of beer per team). I wholeheartedly approve!
WiseBread:
It Pays To Be True To Your School (December 4) - Say what you want about ridiculous tuition costs - when it comes down to it, your school will do everything it can to save you money once you take off that cap and gown. Join your alumni club!
My Four Personal Favorite Savings Stories24/7 Wall Street:
Almost 90% Of US Paper Money Has Traces Of Cocaine (August 17) - This article isn't savings-related at all, but isn't it incredible how much of our cash is covered in blow? It kind of blew my mind (
pun intended). Hooray for the War on Drugs!
Lifehacker:
Increase The Quality Of Cheap Vodka With A Water Filter (November 14) - Though it really excites my inner penniless college student, I still haven't tried this, ironically because buying a water filter would cost way more than just picking up a decent handle of vodka.
Gizmodo:
Baseball King Balls Throw The Curveball For You (November 18) - I picked this one simply because of my fascination with the Asahi Beerbot. Click the "Japan Trend Shop" link and look for the demonstration video, it will change your life.
CNN Money:
Why Cheap Oil Is Here To Stay (December 3) - For the most part, I'm lucky enough not to have to worry about gas prices (
except for my once-weekly 250-mile mega-commute from San Diego to our Santa Monica office and back). Whether you drive a lot or not, this oil forecast sounds pretty awesome.
I hope you've enjoyed these weekly roundups over the past seven months, whether you look to them for practical financial advice, or if you just like perusing the absurd snippets of consumer-related news I excavate from deep within the tubes of the internet. From all of us at Savings.com, have a happy and healthy New Year!
