3 reasons to adopt your next pet from a local shelter

One of the things I'm super passionate about is supporting my local animal shelters and encouraging people to adopt their next pet(s).

The Humane Society "estimates that animal shelters care for 6-8 million dogs and cats every year in the United States, of whom approximately 3-4 million are euthanized (source)." Half of all animals that go into a shelter are put to sleep? That's a sad and sobering statistic, and it brings me to my first reason for adopting:

Saving a Life.

With half of all animals that go into shelters being put to sleep, adopting is a wonderful and noble thing to do. You'll be giving an animal a second chance at life, and gaining a friend in the process!

Saving Money.

When you adopt from a shelter, not only are you saving a life, but you are more than likely saving money as well. Most animals in shelters are already fixed (so you don't have this expense to worry about), and the cost to adopt is relatively inexpensive when compared to purchasing a new puppy (my local shelters charge anywhere from $25-$50 to adopt).

We all like saving money right? If you own a pet or are going to adopt, be sure to read these articles to help you save:

Gaining a Friend.

I've noticed something very interesting about the animals I've rescued from shelters: it's almost as if they know they've been rescued. Shelter animals have been some of the most loyal and loving animals I've ever owned. This is mostly true if you adopt an older cat or dog from a shelter, but can happen if you adopt a puppy or kitten as well.

So what are you waiting for? If you're ready to get started and adopt, be sure to read up on these questions to ask before adopting a pet.

Have you adopted the furry family member in your household? Tell us about him/her!
