Savings Secrets: 4 simple foods to use for healthier Summer eating


Summer is always so much fun! I love coming up with easy and refreshing recipes that are also healthy for my family. This week on the blog we’re talking all things healthier eating and even touching on gluten-free topics! 

But the trickiest thing about eating healthier is keeping it on a budget. Replacing a few items in your kitchen can mean for healthier eating, and these changes won’t be costing you an arm and a leg. 

Here are a couple of items you can add to your grocery shopping list that will make for some healthier eating this Summer. 

1. Lettuce. Keeping lettuce on hand means you will always have salad as an option. And if you can buy your lettuce out of the bag, that means you’re saving money on your salad as well. One of the ways I really save money at Whole Foods Market is by getting my produce in the bulk section vs. buying the pre-bagged items. 
2. Oatmeal.
Oatmeal is is especially important to have on hand if you are a gluten-free eater. Oatmeal can be blended up in a blender to be turned into flour that you can use for baking. But not only that, you can blend it up and add a little to those Summer smoothies.

3. Whole Grain Rice. Keeping whole grain rice on hand means that you can easily whip up some good side dishes or full meals on a budget. I like to cook it in bulk, and then freeze it for use throughout the week and month. Buying a big container of organic rice at Costco costs me about $7, and it lasts a really long time! 

4. Lemons. I’m a huge fan of lemons because not only are they great to use in meals and juices, but I drink lemon water on a daily basis during the Summer. Lemon water acts as a mild and natural cleansing beverage, and it’s refreshing on hot Summer days! Keeping lemons on hand regularly is a must, and they are inexpensive to buy! A bag of lemons from Aldi costs only a couple of dollars.

    I try to keep spinach on hand. I prefer it to lettuce in salads, and having spinach around makes me much more likely to eat salads. Also, I like to blend it up in fruit smoothies- you don’t even notice it!
