6 ways to increase your savings at Walmart
With the abundance of Walmart stores in the nation, you may be wondering how to use that to your advantage. We live about 7 minutes from our local Walmart store and we find ourselves there quite a bit and through our shopping adventures, we’ve learned the following tips to help increase our savings (and yours, too) at Walmart.
1. Price match, price match, price match.
If you don’t want to be driving all around the city to different stores to get various deals, Walmart’s ad match policy is the way to get most of your shopping done in one place. If you find a lower advertised price on an identical product, all you have to do is tell the cashier at any register and they will match that price for you. There are some restrictions, like the size, quantity, brand, etc. has to be identical to the advertised one. There also needs to be a specified price on the ad, not just a percentage off. We love using Walmart’s ad match because it saves us time and money from the gas we would have used traveling to the other stores. It’s also easier to do one-stop shopping if you are shopping with kids in tow.
2. Look for the clearance section(s).
Often times, there is one area in your local Walmart store where they have a bulk of the clearance items available. Our store happens to have it near their lawn and garden section. If there is a seasonal clearance, they may have more near the front of the store. The best thing about shopping the clearance section is that you can get things for a fraction of the original price AND you can use coupons to make them even cheaper. One of our favorite things to do is visit the clearance section about a week after Christmas where most of the items have been marked down to 75% to 90% off of their original price. Many times, you can take the product out of it’s seasonal packaging and you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference from the non-seasonal product, like for bath and body items.
3. Take advantage of their free layaway program.
From September 13th through December 13th, Walmart will be offering a free layaway program, backed by their ad match guarantee. With the layaway plan, you can set aside the items you want at their current price and instead of paying for it in total, you can pay for them over time in installments. This can help you budget for your purchase. To get started, you will need to open a layaway account and make a down payment of either $10 or 10% of the item price, whichever is greater. There is no opening fee to start your layaway, just a $10 fee if you cancel your account. Since they are backing it with their ad match guarantee, you’ll be able to price match if you find the price is lower for the exact same item at a different store.
4. Order samples from Walmart.com.
Occasionally, you will be able to order free samples through Walmart. Besides being able to try out a new product, often times the sample will include a high-value coupon to try the full size of the product. Use the coupon with a good deal to get extra savings!
5. Take advantage of Walmart.com’s free “Site to Store” or “Home Free” options.
If you like to shop online, but hate paying high shipping fees, you can purchase certain products and get free in-store pickup or free shipping on Walmart.com. For the products marked with “Site to Store,” you can pick them up in-store on the same day if they are in stock. If it is not in stock, Walmart will ship it to your store within 5-10 business days. They will hold your order for 14 days. This gives you flexibility to pick it up when it fits your schedule. For the “Home Free” option, you will get free shipping to your door on eligible orders totaling $45 or more. You’ll receive the order within 3-5 business days.
6. Use a Walmart gift card when buying gas.
You can save $0.03 per gallon just buy purchasing a Walmart gift card and using it to pay for your gas at participating Murphy USA gas stations. We have also used this as a budgeting tool because we add only the amount we plan to use for gas on the gift card on a weekly basis and once it’s out, we know that we’ve used up our budgeted gas money for the week. It may not seem like $0.03 per gallon is a huge savings, but it adds up over time!
Of course, don’t forget to use coupons when you can to increase your savings even more! Check out Walmart’s Coupon Policy before you head out to find out which coupons are accepted.
