In many parts of the world, such as China, bamboo plays a role in almost all aspects of society, from construction and architecture to food and medicine. Recently this highly renewable and natural resource has made its way into many beauty products. Bamboo extract contains a high concentration of natural silica which has restorative benefits for the surface of the skin.

The bamboo extract in cosmetics are characterized by their positive effects, including maintenance of hair cells and carrying away dead skin and unwanted agents. Bamboo is also used for packaging beauty products, as renewing them has very little impact on the environment, making them very sustainable and eco-friendly.

Go green and look gorgeous at the same time. Here are some of my picks for affordable, environmentally friendly beauty products that contain bamboo:

Physician's Formula Bamboo Silk Face Powder ($7) - It's formulated with 90% naturally derived ingredients, including bamboo silk which helps firm, lift, and brighten the skin. The makeup is 100% free of harsh chemicals and synthetic fragrances, preservatives, and colors. The case is also made of bamboo and has a compartment for refillable powder or bronzer. It has a built-in mirror and bamboo brush applicator.

Pantene Pro-V Nature Fusion Smoothing Cream ($6) - It keeps frizz at bay and seals the outer layer of your hair to control unwanted humidity for up to 24 hours. This product is great for those who have thick, curly hair.

Sally Hansen Nail Nutrition Green Tea and Bamboo Strengthener ($8) - Helps prevent tearing and peeling and seals layers of the nail. You can also use it as a base coat before you apply nail color.

Nivea Happy Sensation Body Lotion ($6) - The antioxidant-rich bamboo extract helps stop flaky skin and seal in moisture. However, I'm not sure if I'm crazy about the way this stuff smells. It claims to have a "citrus-fruity-floral-oriental-woody" scent.

Nature's Gate Whitening Gel Natural Toothpaste ($7) - Nature's Gate is a company that is dedicated to making botanical personal care products and make efforts to preserve the earth's natural resources by being environmentally friendly and cruelty-free. Their natural toothpaste is fluoride-free and contains bamboo powder, silica, and baking soda to polish your teeth.

Phytoplage Moisturizing Hair and Body Wash ($16) - This is a double-duty after-sun cleanser for your hair and body. It is best used after prolonged sun exposure as it eliminates the buildup of chlorine, sand, and sun products. The bamboo marrow strengthens and restructures the hair follicles.

EcoTools Makeup Brush Set ($10) - The handles are made of bamboo and the animal-free taklon bristles are made from soft and pliable synthetic hair. The pouch it comes with is printed with plant-based ink.
