With the upcoming celebration of Labor Day, it means that hundreds of thousands of university students are going back to college. This means quiet houses for parents, loud neighborhoods for those living in college towns and a sudden proximity to many many germs for dorm-dwellers. Trips to the doctor, medications and even health care products can be expensive--and, when you add that to the possibility of missing class, losing concentration while writing papers, or missing out on the latest rager, the cost of getting sick only climbs.

This leads me to the question; how can college students remain healthy while keeping their meager budgets? I give you three easy, and cheap solutions!

Wash your hands: Months ago, I taught you how to properly wash your hands so as to stop the spread of disease, but maybe you need a reminder. Soap, water, at least thirty-seconds of sudsing, a warm water rinse and paper towels will help prevent the spread of common colds, nasty viruses and give you a chance to pass by that cute guy on the way to the bathroom. (You can also keep hand sanitizer in your bag for emergencies.)

Get some sleep: This free, yet oftentimes overlooked health care product is amazing. USA Today is just one of many sources reminding us that College students' performance suffers from lack of sleep.  Your grades and your health pay the toll for not sleeping enough. Sleep helps your body regenerate the attacked cells and is needed for optimal health. Duke University, UCLA, the University of Maryland and Rice University are four specific college offering programs available to students who are struggling with sleep (or relaxation) issues.

Keep your arsenal stocked: Have everyday medications on hand. I kept one drawer in a three-drawer Sterilite chest for my Advil, Tylenol, Pepto-Bismol, DayQuil, Kleenex packets and even condoms. Not only was this a great way to be sure when I wasn't feeling well I didn't have to go to the student store to get help (can we say overpriced?), but it was a good way to make friends.  You never know when your neighbor is going to need something to make themselves feel better. Though the investment for your medicine cabinet can be daunting at first, I found that shopping through sites like Drugstore.com and Soap.com, I am able to keep my supplies in stock even as an adult.

It's not expensive to take care of yourself while on a college budget--millions of us have done it before, and you can do it too!
