Spending time at the beach, in the pool and engaging in many outdoor activities can take a toll on our bodies. During the summer season, most of us just break out the sunscreen for our skin and forget about our hair which still gets exposed to harsh factors like UV rays, chlorine, and humidity.

Prevent damages and bad summer hair days. Here are some solutions for protecting your hair and keep it looking healthy:

Cleaning Up: Rinse your hair immediately after you step out of a pool. Use a clarifying shampoo like Paul Mitchell Shampoo Three, which is good for removing chlorine and other residue from the hair. There are also some natural remedies that you can do at home to repair chlorine hair. Apple cider vinegar and lemon juice can clean out mineral deposits and chlorine. Simply dilute some apple cider vinegar or lemon juice in a cup of water and pour it over washed hair.

UV Damage: SPF isn't only for your skin. Hair products, like Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil, also contain sunscreen. It protects hair from UV rays for up to 16 hours and is applied before and during sun exposure to minimize color loss and dryness. Another one to try is Phytoplage Protective Beach Spray, which contains an UV filter and protects the hair and it's color from harmful rays.

Avoid Overheating: Limit your use of heat styling tools on your hair such as a blow dryers and curling irons, and air dry whenever possible. I like summers because I can just be more carefree with my hair style. Summer hair should be fun, a little messy, and low maintenance. Try one of these really simple summer hair styles. If you really need to, use a leave-in conditioner or heat protector, like Aveeno Nourish+ Condition Leave-In Treatment before applying any heat to your hair.

Frizz: Wearing your hair up in a bun or braiding it will help contain frizz. If you want to let your hair down, try Living Proof No Frizz Styling Cream to control frizz. It's a lightweight lotion and doesn't contain silicone like most anti-frizz serums which can weigh the hair down.

Wear a Hat: If you want to just roll out of bed and do absolutely nothing to your hair, wear a hat. It not only protects your hair from the sun, wind and other elements, but it also prevents your scalp from burning. There are tons of hat styles so you can have fun with it. The wide brimmed ones offer the most coverage and straw hats with little holes allow sunlight to come through, but help keep your head cool.
