A few weeks ago, I was asked by a fellow
DealPro for my tips on getting perfect eyebrows. I'm always flattered when someone compliments my brows because I really do take the time to maintain them and keep them looking polished. Eyebrows frame your eyes and face, so it's important to keep them well-groomed and choosing the right length, shape, and color can really enhance your appearance.
Here are my tips for getting the perfect eyebrows:
When I first started to really care about my eyebrows, I went to a professional to get the best shape for my face. They also got my brows to look more symmetrical as well, which I always had trouble with when I'd do them myself. Nowadays, it's about $8 for threading and about $5-$10 for brow waxing. After you get your brow treatment from a pro, you can just maintain the shape every week or how ever often you need to and this is how…
First, brush the brow hairs straight up and trim any long hairs that do not go along your natural brow line with a pair of
brow scissors. Do the same for the hairs that grow downward by brushing them down to trim. Always be very careful when trimming and do a little bit at a time to avoid mistakes.
A basic rule of thumb to determine the length of your eyebrows is to use something with a straight edge and align it straight up by the side of your nose. That is where the start of your eyebrows should be. Then take your straight edge and align from the side of your nose to the outer corner of your eye. This is where your eyebrow should end. See the picture on the bottom. The middle line is where your natural arch should be.
Use a good, angled tweezer to clean up any strays outside of your brow shape. The best tweezers I've used are
Tweezerman (
they also sharpen your tweezers for free if they have become dull) and the much cheaper
Revlon Slant Tip Tweezer. A common mistake people do is get too tweezer-happy and pluck their brows too thin so from time to time take a few seconds to see what you've done.
Fill in sparse areas to give them a more defined look. Another rule of thumb is, when choosing colors, go one shade lighter than your natural brow color. I prefer a powder formula or a gel over a pencil because it is more natural looking and softer in texture. Use a dense angled brush for powders and fill in using short, light strokes. I really like the
Urban Decay Brow Box Kit and
NYX Eyebrow Cake Powder. Both come with two different colors and wax to keep brows in place.
If you need to, after you fill them in use a clear brow gel or wax to keep brows in place. Alternately, you can just use a thin film of Vaseline. You can also try spraying a little bit of hairspray on a brow brush and lightly combing it through or use some clear mascara if you have it.
Another tip for enhancing the eyebrows is to use line the bottom of the brows with a highlighter. Dab on a little bit of concealer with an angle brush under the brow line and along the brow bone to give them a lift. You can also use a light shimmery eyeshadow.
