Chelsea Clinton's Wedding Might Have Cost $5 Million--but Yours Doesn't Have To!

Although spring is usually when we think of weddings, this summer I seem to be surrounded by them as well. Two cousins recently tied the knot (not to each other), and my sister is planning her upcoming nuptials. High profile brides like Chelsea Clinton and Carrie Underwood also took the plunge this summer, sparing no expense with lavish ceremonies and hundreds of guests.

If you're among those looking to get hitched soon, you are likely searching for a perfect location for your wedding and/or reception. If you don't have the finances to rent an entire New York estate like Chelsea, or even one of its wings, consider these ideas for venues that will fit even the smallest budget.

Heather touched upon the topic of cheap wedding venues in her recent budget wedding planning post, but here are a few more ideas:

  1. Your church or synagogue - These special places can be beautiful as well as hold sentimental value for you, your spouse, and family as a religious gathering place. They provide parking and seating for large crowds, and often offer sufficient spaces for both the wedding and reception. In addition, as a member you can usually secure the site at no charge or for a minimal donation.

  2. Your workplace - In high school I worked at Wal-Mart, and one of my coworkers really did get married there in the aisle next to the jewelry counter. However, if you're looking for somewhere with a few less shopping carts, think about other buildings where you or a family member are employed. Large office building lobbies, restaurants, or small businesses may allow an employee or his/her family to use the building at little or no cost.

  3. Public buildings - Community centers, colleges, public school buildings, or museums may offer low cost rentals and are already equipped with restrooms, communal spaces, and kitchens. These can range in appearance from industrial to historic, so drive around to see which appeals to you most. Remember that décor can also add a personal touch to any space.

  4. Outdoors - Take your pick of the park, the beach, a hillside, backyard, or botanical garden for the perfect outdoor wedding. An informal feel and natural setting create a romantic atmosphere even on a small budget, and small or large crowds are easy to accommodate. These venues are free or may include a small charge for picnic area rental or other basic services.

The key is finding somewhere that excites you and will always be special. That doesn't mean spending the down payment on your first home for an evening wedding at the most expensive country club in town. Think creatively about how you can turn each potential space into the perfect site for your nuptials. Once you have selected a location, continue responsible wedding planning by budgeting and shopping around for decorations, flowers and food. Consider the experience a jumpstart into a life of frugal living together for you and your spouse, and cherish the memories of the unique venue where it all started!
