Shall we play a game? (
Sorry, just watched "WarGames" for the zillionth time.) I'm a big fan of playing games on my PC--especially when I can play them free or cheap.
Today I bring you three games that couldn't be more different: an action-adventure classic that spawned a movie, a Bejeweled-style puzzle game, and a brain-bending first-person sci-fi, um, well, something.
Thankfully, all three titles have this in common: they're free or dirt-cheap. Read on.
Big Kahuna Reef
This is one of those puzzle games you play when you've got 5-10 minutes to kill--but don't want to do any actual killing. Big Kahuna Reef looks and plays a lot like the classic Bejeweled--if Bejeweled was played underwater with fish instead of jewels. The game has low system requirements, so it's a great choice for netbooks.
Portal
An entirely different kind of puzzle game, Portal unfurls like a sci-fi mystery--with you in the starring role. After awaking in a futuristic sleeping pod, you follow the instructions of a disembodied voice as you learn to use and navigate "portals." I won't spoil any of the surprises, but suffice it to say, there's a reason why this is regarded as one of the top PC games ever. From now until May 24, you can download it absolutely free. (
You do need to sign up for a free account with the Steam service, however, and install the Steam download client.)
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time You've probably seen the trailer for the eponymous movie, which opens May 28th. What you may not have known is that "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" was born a PC game, a thrilling action-adventure with lots of running, jumping, fighting, and, believe it or not, plot. The game is seven years old, but it still holds up pretty well. And right now you can download it from Direct2Drive for just $1.
There you have it: three incredibly fun games for a combined total of a buck. I defy you to find a better deal!
