This week Yasar and I get hands on with Roxio's Game Capture device which allows gamers to record, edit, and upload gameplay videos from your Xbox 360 and PS3 systems.

Guy: The Roxio Game Capture is quite easy to set up. The package comes with the GameCAP device, component cables to connect to your computer and TV, and the installation disc.  Set-up is fairly easy. You simply connect the Component AV cables that came with your Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 to the Game Capture, then connect the provided Component Video and RCA Audio cables into the Game Capture device. Follow that up by connecting them to your TV and then connecting the included USB cord from the Roxio GameCAP device to the USB2.0 port of your computer.

Insert the software disk and voila, you're done.

Once the software and wired connections have been made, you'll click on the GameCAP icon and get started.

Yasar: Before Guy dives into our experiences using the device, here are the more technical specs you'll need to know:
  • High speed connection via USB 2.0 port
  • The system runs on Windows 7, Vista, or XP.
  • Intel Core 2 Duo Processor 1.8 GHz or AMD Athlon x2 64 2.0 GHz, 2GB RAM
  • DirectX® 9.0c compatible graphics card or higher, sound card
  • 2GB free hard drive space for installation. 10+ GB free recommended for video recording.
  • Windows Media Player 11 or higher
Guy: Thanks, Yasar. We were running the software/program on Windows 7. The first thing you'll be presented with after clicking the icon is a screen offering you the choice to CAPTURE or EDIT & SHARE.

CAPTURE allows you to record games you are currently playing. Want to pop in Guitar Hero Metallica and show your friends online just how well you shred? You can capture all of your metal glory with this device and program. You can tune your settings to produce the recorded captures in AVI, DIVX, or WMV format. Set your capture length for as long or as short as you'd like.

I liked that you can set a file name right in the capture screen, labeling your video with the date or something equally catchy like "Yasar Loses Again." While capturing your gameplay, you'll also be able to see the time elapsed, view the created file size, recording time left, and space left on your drive.  You can also sort, view, and filter recent video captures.

After you've recorded all of that, you can then move onto the EDIT and SHARE phase. The first thing you'll see is a small screen that says Create A New Production. This allows you to set the screen format (Widescreen, Normal), select more settings, or Edit An Existing Production.

There are guys in my EA Sports NCAA Football 2011 online dynasty that already use cap cards to record their games and in-season recruiting. Other friends create their own wrestling shows utilizing WWE Smackdown vs. Raw game series. Now I can join them. (Yes, I am that geeky.)

Once you're in, you'll be given a plethora of options to choose from to create your video(s). Anyone familiar with other video editing programs should feel right at home with Roxio VideoWave. It's very user-friendly and will be quick to get into even for novice video editors.

For reference, here is a screen cap of what my VideoWave screen looked like pre-edits:

Yasar: It's also quite affordable at just $99.99. One drawback we noticed when testing it out had to do with the video. There is no ability to capture via HDMI. Running our 360 at 1080i, we got a fuzzy picture and game cap crashes. We had to lower the visual of our 360 to 480p in order to get the capture device to work properly. Once that was done, all worked well. However, it meant lowering the resolution of our games while playing in order to fully enjoy the geeky coolness of the game capture device.

Guy: Overall, it was a fun product to test out and I think it is safe to say that we are completely hooked on it. It's hard not going the full geek-oid now and recording every game we play to share with the world. (SDC Office Fight Night Tournament Part 2 anyone?)

In the future, look for our reviews to feature footage captured using Roxio's device. You'll be able to watch us walk through the games as we give our two cents about the latest shooters, sports, or social games to hit the market. You can upload directly from the editor to YouTube, Facebook, and  You can also export videos in a variety of different formats to work on several different devices including iPhones and iPads.

Until then, check out a quick video that we put together of us playing a few games, all captured using the Roxio device. Video quality once uploaded to YouTube as an .avi is less than great, but  that can be fixed with further tweaking. Quality on my computer was great, so maybe it's a YouTube thing. (Enjoy the silly voices as I sped up and slowed down the gameplay in parts.)

If that convinces you to run out and purchase one to record your Madden online league games, then be sure to check out our exclusive Roxio code offering 15% off plus free shipping on the Game Capture.
