With any luck, winter will be over in another three weeks or so. But for those dealing from cabin fever from weathering one too many blizzards, Spring can't come soon enough. In addition to cabin fever, frostbite and ice-related injuries, winter can create another health issue: depression.
SAD, or
seasonal affective disorder, is a side effect of the darker days of winter. This depressive disorder might be related to a lack of serotonin, a hormone that regulates mood. Over at The Huffington Post, Dr. Tian Dayton posted an article on how to
achieve natural highs by jump starting serotonin.
Here are four easy ways to boost your serotonin levels to help escape the winter doldrums:
If you're looking for ways to increase your brain's
serotonin without drugs, it's as easy as 1, 2, 3, 4:
- Sunlight There's definitely a tendency to avoid the frigid temps by staying inside, but if you want to increase your serotonin levels, bundle up and get outdoors! Bright light prevents trytophan depletion--tryptophan being a precursor of serotonin. Can't get the RDA of sunlight? Try a Verilux Happy Lite from Bellacor for less than $90--and save even more with one of our Bellacor coupons.
- Exercise - Physical activity also stimulates serotonin levels. Ever heard of a "runner's high"? Aerobic exercise that gets your heart and lungs pumping will also help serotonin synthesis. Lift weights, lift your mood.
- Food - There's been some research indicating tryptophan-rich foods like milk and chickpeas can increase serotonin levels. Hummus, anyone?
- Happiness - When you're down because of the incessantly gray weather and bone-chilling temps, it's hard to hear that "being happy" increases serotonin and in turn improves one's mood. But working to improve your mood to combat the depressive effects of low serotonin isn't as vicious circle as it sounds...Netflix some of your favorite comedies, engage yourself in the satisfaction of a fascinating hobby or enjoy the company of friends and family. Positive moods begets increased serotonin which in turn begets...more positive moods. Not to mention better health and well-being.
How have you been keeping up your spirits this winter? Looking forward to Spring? Tell us about it in the comments!
