Money Saving Tips
If there is one thing Napster taught us back in the nineties, it's that you can't stop smart, internet savvy kids from getting free music. Artists, labels, and companies have finally begun to accept this sad (
or happy) fact and, now more than ever, sites for free music abound.
PANDORA
Pandora uses the "Music Genome Project" to hand pick songs that are just your taste based on an artist or song you like. While you can listen to specific songs or artists on demand, it's a great way to discover new bands or set a mood without having to create a playlist.
LAST FM
With
Last FM, you can check out artists you've heard about--and its user-generated data base recommends similar artists based on your preferences. It's another great way to discover new bands, and it also has a social networking function so you can meet other Juggalos, Deadheads, and Morrisey fans all from the comfort of your sofa.
GROOVESHARK
In my experience, almost every song I can think of can be found on
Grooveshark's epic database. Even early leaks of yet-to-be-released albums can sometimes be found deep in the Grooveshark annals. I love how you can create your own playlist--rendering Grooveshark like iTunes…but free.
The best way to use these great resources while still supporting recording artists is to spread the word about your favorite bands, and see them in concert. And if you really like an album you hear online, consider actually buying it on iTunes or at your local record store.
What's your favorite band? Shout them out in the comments below!
