May is National Family Wellness Month here in the United States. Even before our family was aware of this, we began to focus on doing more activities together.
I'm not sure if it's due to the reflection that comes along with Mother's Day or the vibrant spring weather, but thus far we've had several family board game nights (
my son loves Hi Ho Cherry-O!), made visits to the California Academy of Sciences and the Aquarium of the Bay, and planned a backyard barbecue. We are bonding, learning, and having fun together, all of which coincidentally contributes to our wellness as a family unit.
According to
Words of Wellness, the objective of this designated month is to "spend more time with family and appreciate those closest to you" because "love is the glue that binds." Gatherings for events like Cinco de Mayo, Mother's Day and Memorial Day are examples of some of the built-in May holidays that provide a terrific opportunity for togetherness with family members or even friends who are practically family.
Of course, the greatest part of wellness is that it doesn't have to cost a penny. The Words of Wellness website suggests making a phone call to an estranged relative and expressing your love to family members. Below are some resources for activities that will nurture physical, mental (
May is also Mental Health Month), or spiritual health--all of which can be included in family time and many of which are low cost or even free:
What resources can you add to this list? How will your family be focusing on wellness this month?
