For those of you anxiously awaiting to find out whether or not the famed Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, Donna Henes of the Huffington Post quite accurately points out that it doesn't matter either way.
Yup, that's right folks--there's six more weeks of winter either way. So what purpose does February 2nd serve other than being an excuse for a media frenzy centered around a reluctant rodent? Perhaps it's an opportunity to take page from the eponymous movie:
With Groundhog Day marking the midway mark of winter--and those New Year's resolutions made a mere month ago--why not take this opportunity to reboot and reinvigorate yourself? After all, there are still eleven months left in 2010. Starting today, resolve to:
Learn a new skill. Maybe you won't be able to master a piano concerto like Phil Connors, but whether it's a programming language or software application to enhance your resume or foreign language or ballroom dancing class just for fun, taking on a new class or hobby is beneficial to health and well-being. Yeah, we're all about getting our bodies into shape for the new year, but exercising the mind has health benefits as well.
Enjoy life's simple pleasures. Unlike Bill Murray's character, most of us only get to live through a day once--so savor your cup of coffee, make snow angels with your kids or say a prayer and drink to world peace. It's all good.
Reconnect with someone with your past. It doesn't have to be your alma mater's version of the annoying Ned Ryerson, but surely there's a high school pal you lost contact with over the years that you still remember fondly. These days Facebook is a great way for tracking down long-lost classmates.
Connect with someone in your present. Phil is finally able to break out of the time loop when he is able to live the day to its fullest and make a true connection with the lovely Rita.
Although groundhog Phil has predicted six more weeks of winter, the good news is that there's only six more weeks until spring! Until then, what will you be doing to commemorate making it to the midpoint?
