The Brush Off

You know you need the right shampoo, the right conditioner, and the right styling products--but did you know the right brush could transform your hair?  Using the wrong brush can damage your strands, undo your do, or deflate your coif.   You don't want to spend half an hour blow drying your hair just to have it puff out, fall flat, or curl up--and you DON'T want to snap and snag your hair on the wrong brush.

Use this guide to find the perfect brush for you at the perfect price.

For Blown Out Volume

If it's a great blow-out you're after, you've got to get the Marilyn Brush.  The unique hourglass shape of this brush gives the most swingy, fabulous volume to straight hair, while it simultaneously stretches curls to perfect smoothness.  It's a great all-around brush for heat styling.

For Flipping Bangs and Curling Ends

Try a round brush to get soft curls while you blow dry.  A vented brush speeds up dry time, while a thermal, ionic ceramic brush protects locks from heat damage.

For Detangling

If your hair is a tangled mess, a Paddle Brush can bust those knots while also offering a nice scalp massage.

For Smoothing Bobs

Cushion Style brushes smooth for a sleek look and are just right for chin length hair.

For Pampering Yourself

A boar bristle brush may cost a pretty penny, but it smooths your locks and distributes your scalp oils for shiny, healthy hair every day.  Mason Pearson is the gold standard (and the price shows it!) because it has been known to last decades, even with daily use.

A word of caution on bristles: Try natural, try nylon--just please don't use plastic.  Most cheapo plastic bristle brushes will snap your hair leaving you with nasty breakage.  And curly girls should never brush wet hair; use a wide tooth comb to get out your tangles.  Otherwise, you're begging for frizz.

Make sure whenever you detangle, you start from the bottom and work your way up.  A spray on leave-in conditioner lubricates strands for a gentler brush out.  When blow drying, be sure to use a thermal protectant or oil to keep your hair protected and shiny.
