Salem
Well, sure. What could be more of a slam dunk for spooky fun than the home of the Salem Witch Trials? Fun fact: contrary to popular belief, no accused witches were actually burned at the stake at the Salem Witch Trials. However, several were hanged and one unlucky individual was pressed to death(!) Salem's got loads of otherworldly activities scheduled for all of October, not just Halloween itself.
Montego Bay, Jamaica
Jamaica is full of good ghost stories, but the most famous might be about The White Witch. I'd love to synopsize the story for you here, but I got too creeped out and had to stop reading it. Yes, it's that scary. It's also not PG, so don't go reciting it around the campfire to a bunch of Cub Scouts. If you think you've got the courage to go snooping around the Great House of Rose Hall in Montego Bay, check out our smoking Sandals resort specials--guaranteed Voodoo-free.
The Queen Mary
The Queen Mary makes her home these days in Long Beach, California. And apparently it IS home to a bevy of unruly spirits just waiting to terrify you. In addition to the regularly scheduled Paranormal Shipwalk Tour, Paranormal Investigation Tour and Dining With the Spirits Dinner (you don't think they're playing this up at all, do you?), the Queen Mary will host its 15th Annual Terrorfest, "Shipwreck!" which promises 15 Nights of Terror. Personally I'd be more inclined to skip the terror and instead visit the cute otters at the nearby Aquarium of the Pacific, but that's just me.
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
If you're working under the reasonable assumption that the more spirits flitting about in one location, the better your chances of running into one (or through one?), you can't beat the Gettysburg battlefield for sheer body count. And the popular Ghosts of Gettysbug tour has no less than seven tours scheduled for Halloween night. These guys don't mess around: they've been voted the #1 Ghost Tour in the World by Haunted America Tours.
Manchester, Vermont
And the Civil War-era ghosts keep coming! After visiting Gettysburg, why not take a little jaunt up to Vermont to the Equinox Resort & Spa? After your maple sugar scrub and hot tub soak, you can indulge in the hotel's other famous activity: searching for the ghosts of Mary Todd Lincoln and son. The Lincoln family spent two happy summers at the Equinox and was planning to return for the summer of 1865. I don't think I need to tell you why their plans changed. Supposedly the Lincoln matriarch and at least one of her sons roam the hallways of the Equinox trying to recapture the happiness they felt before that really awful night at the theater. Don't worry, if you don't see the Lincolns, a plethora of non-famous ghosts also stroll the halls of the Equinox on an eternal search for peace and/or a great facial.
Your Home Town
Ooooh, freaked you out a little bit with that one, didn't I? If you don't have the time or inclination to travel to say, Montego Bay for the weekend, check out this state-by-state list of haunted places at TheShadowlands.net. It is amazingly comprehensive. I searched the town where I grew up, and found out I was very lucky to not attend Jefferson Middle School. We students over at neighboring Lincoln Junior High never had to deal with the ghost of a murdered little girl endlessly wandering the hallways in search of her younger brother. Ewwwwwww!
Safe and spooky travels!
