If we aren't working, sleeping, or having some down time in front of the television, chances are we're socializing. Hanging out with friends is an instrumental part of achieving a healthy life. In fact, researchers are now finding that a substantial social life can positively impact our physical well-being and those who have very few close ties are at a doubled risk of dying of heart disease and other health ailments.
Yet when we add up the numbers, having a vibrant social life can sometimes be costly. However, it doesn't necessarily have to be. Here are some tips for enjoying evenings with friends without running up the bill.
Research drink specials.
Most of the time, my friends and I would go to the same bars and clubs every weekend because we had become accustomed to them. We'd often choose a sense of familiarity over price. However, you'd be surprised at how many establishments you can find that have discounts on drinks and food on certain days if you look. Many bars have reverse happy hours (Happy Hour specials in the evening, so you don't have to rush for the traditional happy hour right after work) and some clubs have cover-free days, too.
Always carpool.
Although carpooling may take a little more planning, it saves much more money than you'd think. Not only will you cut down on gas expenditures, but you'll also avoid the pain of paying for parking all on your own.
Consider nights in.
While going out with your friends has its charms, overcrowded bars, clubs, and restaurants can sometimes be inimical to socializing. You can't really share the latest gossip with your buds if you're pushing through throngs of people to get a drink or if you have to yell over loud music. Inviting friends over for dinner is a great way to enjoy company without spending as much money. These situations are especially amenable to potluck-style events. That way, everyone gets to share their own culinary creations and no one person has to shell out all the money.
Be on the lookout for free events.
While going to the blockbuster concert of a big name band is always fun--especially if you're a rabid fan--going to concerts put out by local bands are often free of charge. This way you'll get more exposure to your local scene, you'll be supporting musicians that are just getting their start, and you'll be saving substantially. There are plethora of free events beyond concerts. For example: museums, parks, and even local universities featuring art exhibits and plays are all great places to look for some free entertainment.
These are just a few tips for minimizing the costs that build up while we let loose and relax with friends. What's most important is planning your social time thoroughly beforehand, so that you remember to take into account the money you'll be spending. Having fun with friends and family is priceless, but it need not always be a cash-draining experience if you're careful.
