Valentine's Day is a cash cow for a whole host of industries. Many ads this time of year are out to convince you that anyone who spends less than a month's salary on holiday dedicated to romance doesn't really love their partner.
But don't believe the hype! A good Valentine's Day should be thoughtful, not expensive. As guest blogger Raine wrote, opting for experiences instead of things is a great way to
celebrate Valentine's Day.
Here are some cheap and creative ideas for making date night on February 14th special.
1.
MuseumsThis may sounds like a dorky option, but hear me out. If your significant other has a specific interest or hobby, look into whether there's a relevant museum near you. Everyone enjoys a nice dinner out, but a museum tailored to your partner's unique interests is especially thoughtful. If his/her interests don't cater to museums, ask or make a judgment call as to whether s/he would like to visit a local art museum. Art museums are interesting, cheap or free, and often have pretty gardens or grounds to stroll around. Plus, you'd be supporting a good cause!
2.
Nature in Various FormsSpending time together in nature can be very romantic. If you both like hiking, search out regional, state, or national parks in your area. Bring a picnic lunch, and make a day of it. If hiking isn't your thing, take Henry's suggestion for
frugal ideas for Valentine's Day and go for a walk on the beach (
if you live near one). If you own bikes, find local biking paths and take a nice long ride. If you're not in the mood for exercise, consider taking a scenic drive to a destination with nice picnic grounds.
3.
Local Comedy/Theater
Ask around or check
Goldstar for local comedy and theater events. You'll be surprised at how many interesting theater events are going on at any given time. Many local theaters are small and intimate--and a new experience is always romantic. Of course, there's always the risk of terrible performances, but even then you'll have something to laugh about later (
after you're out of earshot).
4.
Bowling/RollerskatingWork off your Valentine's chocolates with a few laps around the roller
rink, or get a little friendly competition going during a bowling match. Most bowling alleys and roller rinks offer one or more discount nights during the week, and usually cost $10/ person or under even on full-priced nights. Plus Jackie recently posted two
bowling freebies which will help make your evening out really affordable.
5.
Beer Brewery or Other ToursBrewery tours are fun and interesting, and often come with a few free tastes. Best of all, they're usually free. Check
Real Beer's brewery tour index for breweries in your area. If you're not into beer, look into touring a chocolate factory. Those tours are also generally free and come with samples.
How are you planning to celebrate Valentine's Day?
