Lady Gaga Meat Bikini and Other Edible Clothing

For those of you that watched the VMAs on Sunday, you might have caught a glimpse of the infamous meat dress worn by Lady Gaga. Yes, I said meat, as in 25 pounds of flank steak. Designer Franc Fernandez said it took him two days to stitch the dress together and he shows off how he put it together on his blog. The price of the dress is not disclosed, but the cost for all the meat is $100. And it comes with a matching meat hat, boots and purse.

Personally, I would never wear raw, stinky meat on myself but to each their own.

Gaga, who is a vegan herself, wore the meat dress to advocate human rights, stating "If we don't stand up for what we believe in, we don't fight for our rights, pretty soon we're gonna have as much rights as the meat on our bones." During her post-VMA interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Gaga also discussed the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy stating that she is against it and asking for repeal of the law that won't allow gays to serve in the military. I admire her for her outspoken ideas and outrageous outfits. But if you take a closer look, everything she does has a reason behind it.

Ellen DeGeneres, who is a vegan and animal rights activist herself, offered Lady Gaga an animal-friendly outfit in lieu of the stinky meat one. The vegetable bikini and skirt made of corn husks probably cost less than $100. I might even wear this myself as it's quite cute and doesn't smell of rotting flesh.

As recent article at Vanity Fair on Lady Gaga's meat couture and edible outfits got me to thinking about other wearable food items I've seen.   For those who are interested in making clothes out of food, here's a list of interesting edible outfits:

1. Clothing and accessories made from gelatin. Emily Crane, a 22 year-old fashion student from London, creates all her masterpieces from the same material as Jello.

2. Prom dresses made from skim milk. Casey Larkin, a designer from San Francisco, transforms skim milk into soft fabric with a special steam treatment.

3. Holiday dress made from Lindor chocolates. Designer Lindka Cierich designed this impressive gown using over one thousand Lindor chocolates. At least the chocolate won't melt since it's wrapped.

4. Burger sneaker. This one gets points for being super cool. Olle Hemmendorff made the shoe using baguette, beef patties, pickles, tomatoes and cheese. I'm not sure you can actually wear it, but it looks very much like a real sneaker.

5. Spaghetti dress with meatballs necklace. Jeremy Scott designed this cool and yummy dress for his fall 2006 collection. Now, that's an edible dress.

6. My favorite and the easiest and cheapest to make is the lettuce bikini. Think Eve in the garden but with a modern twist. Just get 3 pieces of leafy lettuce, 2 for the breast area, 1 for the bikini area and tie it all together with some ribbon or string. All this for under $5. Sounds like a great
Halloween costume to me.

What other edible clothing have you guys come across or made?
