Laundry Basket Case? Liven Up the Laundry Room!

Laundry: is there another chore more annoying? I don't think so. That's probably why most laundry rooms are reflective of the task itself: bland, lifeless, "just the facts, Ma'am."

But now with the stylish new washer and dryer sets available in an array of colors, the laundry room is vying for some stage time. So, if you're going to invest in one of these new sets, or you're just plain bored, try a few of these ideas to spruce up the chore-torture chamber:

  • Paint it any color you please! Why not? Chances are, not many people are going to be hanging out in there, and if they are- put them to work! I saw a cute idea where the walls were painted in a bold black and white stripe and the washer and dryer set was a gleaming monochromatic red. It looked more like a nightclub than a laundry room--and a lot more fun! Check out Home Depot, as they usually run some great appliance deals and many include free shipping.
  • If you have the space, you can turn a portion of your laundry room into a craft area with a large table or high-top counters and built-in storage bins.
  • Hang funny family pictures from baby's first step to present-day and take a trip down memory lane while folding those towels. (snore)
  • Suspend a rod from the ceiling for hanging delicates to dry. It's more interesting than a tension rod and it won't take up any wall space.
  • Pick out some fun sorting and storage bins and stay organized.
  • Go with the Ye Ole Laundry Room theme and find one of those old washboards at a flea market or novelty store. Then put up a decorative shelf and display your flea market find with some vintage soap tins. That way, when you have the occasional bad attitude about cleaning your duds, you can glance up at the washboard and remember just how bad a chore can get!
  • I saw someone use their laundry room as part guest room, (which made me laugh out loud) but it wasn't such a bad idea--especially for those guests that overstay their welcome!

When you think about it, the laundry cycle is as profound as life itself: it never ends. Might as well get the most out of it!
