Last year Sheena Matheiken decided to wear just one dress for an entire year. She called her endeavor The Uniform Project. Matheiken attempted this crazy fashion feat in honor of sustainable fashion and to raise money for The Akanksha Foundation which provides school uniforms and other basic school supplies to children in the slums of India. So far, The Uniform Project has raised over $56,000, and Matheiken is about 3 months away from ending her journey.
Inspired by Matheiken's endless outfit creativity, I decided to give one of my own little black dresses three distinctly different looks for you viewing pleasure. The black dress in question is an irregular American Apparel dress that I bought on sale for $15. You take a look, and see if you can find anything irregular about it, as I love this irregularity for its versatility.
Matheiken's dress was designed by Eliza Starbuck and can be worn many ways, including buttoned, or more like a shirt. My American Apparel dress is a little less versatile as far as simple functions of buttons, but with just a few accessories can definitely be given a very different look.
Take a look at my uniform-inspired photos and see how you think I did.
Matheiken did a great job of changing the look of her wardrobe with simple vests, tights in a multitude of colors and patterns, brightly colored, shoes, scarves, belts, etc.
The simple American Apparel model offers a nice, flattering V-neck style which may be a bit racy for work, but add a scarf and a jacket and then you're good for work or play.
I also grabbed a junky belt and head band to give it a bit of a retro look as well.
Matheiken's project is inspiring in that we really can pulls some great outfits over what may exist in our closets. Not only that, she's raising money for a great cause.
