The more gear you bring into your home theater--HDTV, DVR, Blu-ray player, etc.--the more remotes you have to juggle.
Given my limited dexterity, I've long been a fan of the Logitech Harmony line of universal remotes, which let you ditch all your other clickers in favor of one feature-packed replacement.
The best of the lot (
and the one I own and love) is the Harmony One. It has a rather steep list price of $249.99, but
CompUSA currently has the
Harmony One for $149.99 shipped. That's after applying the
CompUSA coupon code at checkout.
If you don't like messing around with codes, you can get the
Logitech Harmony One Universal Remote from TigerDirect by way of
Amazon.com.
What makes the Harmony One so awesome? For starters, it's without question the most comfortable remote I've ever used. But even better than that, it's much easier to program than most universal remotes thanks to Logitech's desktop software (
available for PC and Mac).
Basically, you tell the software the makes and models of the gear you own, and it programs the remote accordingly. Even better, you can create an almost unlimited number of "activities," like "turn on TV, switch to HDMI 2 input, turn on Blu-ray player," and so on--all of which are performed with the tap of a single button.
Yes, tap. In addition to its various buttons for things like volume control and channel select, the One sports a color touchscreen. That's how you activate activities and access individual controls for specific devices.
Another big plus: the Harmony One comes with rechargeable batteries and a charging dock, so you'll never face the horror of a dead remote seconds before your favorite show is about to start.
While $150 may seem like a lot for a remote, this is one home-theater accessory you'll never regret buying. I don't know how long this sale price will be available, so if you're interested, act fast.
