Making Music News: WOWee One iPod Speakers

We all know that phones and iPods can't offer anything but weak, low-quality external audio due to their small size, but I recently got my hands on a portable super-speaker called the WOWee One--which is about to totally revolutionize mobile music listening.
As you can tell from the picture above the WOWee One is roughly the size of an iPhone, but thicker, heavier and a little more elongated. It comes with a mini-USB port and cable that connects to your computer for charging the internal battery, and a standard 3.5mm stereo audio cable that connects to pretty much any mobile device.

This little monster can reach 90 decibels at full volume, but it's the ridiculously deep, rich bass that will astound you. I was blown away the first time I heard what this thing can do when plugged into an iPod. I showed it to two of my friends recently. "How does it do that?" one of them asked incredulously, and the other just flatly stated, "That is the coolest thing I've ever seen."

So how does it pack such a fierce punch? "A down-firing speaker uses patented Gel Audio™ technology to project low-frequency sound waves that turn adjoining objects or surfaces into a subwoofer." That's right: If you press the sticky rubberized base of the WOWee One to a desk, a wall, a window, or any other hard, flat surface, the result is thudding bass that sounds like it's coming from a real sub.

The WOWee One offers 20 hours of playtime after a full charge--which makes it perfect for mobile partying. It's definitely optimized for hip hop and other bass-heavy genres of music, but if you mess with the equalizer settings on your source device, you should be able to find a suitable pre-set for optimum sound quality of whatever type of music you want to listen to. If you're looking for something to make up for the antenna issues plaguing your new iPhone 4, the WOWee One would certainly enhance your experience.

You can buy one of these bad boys from Amazon or Buy.com (it retails for $80 on both sites), but if you check out the Savings.com personal finance blog tomorrow, we will be running a contest to win a FREE, brand-new WOWee One!
