Mrs. Money: 4 Ways to Save with Natural Moisturizers

With winter quickly approaching, I'm beginning to experience drier skin than normal.  It makes sense: once the humidity from the summer is gone, the lower moisture content in the air affects your skin.  Conventional lotions can cost a lot of money and contain nasty chemicals, dyes, and other additives that enter your bloodstream almost immediately upon application.  Fortunately, there are many natural moisturizers that are cheap and natural that you can use to quench your parched skin.

Here are some of my favorite frugal ways to combat dry skin:

  • Coconut Oil.  I've sung the praises of coconut oil before, but it's worth mentioning again!  Coconut oil is naturally anti-fungal, anti bacterial, anti-parasitic and anti-viral, so not only does it make an awesome moisturizer on your skin, but it also helps protect you from germs!

  • Jojoba Oil.  I have found that jojoba oil is the cheapest either through Amazon or at Trader Joe's.  It goes on smoothly, moisturizes well and can also be used as hair conditioner.  I like jojoba oil because it is a light oil that dissolves quickly into the skin.

  • Olive oil.  Olive oil can be used as lotion, but can also be used as a lip moisturizer as well!  It is a little thicker than coconut and jojoba oil, so use sparingly, but for really dry feet and elbows it works wonders.  Before you go to bed, put some olive oil on your lips and when you wake up in the morning they'll be so smooth!

  • Water.  Not only is water incredibly inexpensive, but being hydrated can keep your skin hydrated, as well as keep your body healthy.  It will help your body eliminate toxins and keep your organs functioning properly.  You will do your body a favor by drinking about 64 ounces of water a day!

Don't load your body with many chemicals by using heavy lotions.  Natural solutions are cheaper, easier, and will keep your body healthy.
