Color expert Pantone comes out with a shade that represents the feel of each year. For 2012, it is
Tangerine Tango, a reddish orange hue. "
Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy," says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.
This color is not a surprise, considering in 2011 we saw orange lips on celebs such as January Jones, and Beyoncé wore a reddish orange Lanvin caftan to the MTV Video Music Awards (the same night she announced her pregnancy to the world). Tangerine Tango is a shade that is surprisingly versatile, a fun alternative to red, and a hue that works with neutrals, basic black and white, and even other brights for an intense colorblocking experience.
While Tangerine Tango is the hot color for 2012, there's nothing wrong with adding this color to your personal style right now. This is a shade that looks amazing in winter, but will still look fresh come spring and into summer. Here's some great pieces I have found online that embrace Tangerine Tango:
Pantone Color of the Year Mug - Start each morning with a steaming cup of java in a mug showcasing Tangerine Tango! This is also a wonderful gift for the fashion or design enthusiast in your life.
The mug is a limited edition and arrives in a gift box in the reddish-orange color. $25.00
Ann Taylor Extra-fine Merino Crewneck - When I stopped into
Ann Taylor this week I was amazed that they had already embraced the Tangerine Tango trend! While this sweater may look like a classic red online, it has a warm hue of orange in person.
Wear this winter with dark denim trousers and suede wedges on the weekend, with a navy wool pencil skirt and patterned tights to work, and with a gray sequined mini and fishnets to a holiday soiree. Come spring, pair with light neutrals like cream and tan for a fresh look.
$68.00, and at time of writing this Ann Taylor is having 40% off all full-price merchandise in their store.
Nars Lipstick in "Heat Wave" - Jenna Lyons, Creative Director of
J. Crew and fashion icon is known for her signature orange-red lips. In an interview once, she mentioned this is her lipstick of choice.
This is a semi-matte lipstick that will brighten up any ensemble. With such an intense lip, keep the rest of your makeup to a minimum, focusing on glowing skin. $24.00
ASOS Slot Through Portfolio Clutch - A fantastic way to bring a trendy color to a wardrobe of basics is with accessories, and clutches are a great way to combine color trends with an accessory trend.
This portfolio clutch from
ASOS is a classic style, and large enough to hold all your purse essentials. Wear with your favorite little black dress, opaque tights and booties for a hot winter look; come spring wear with a cotton shift in gray and nude heels for a modern and graphic look. $36.36
Trina Turk Orange and Gold Bangle Bracelet - I love an accessory that embraces current trends, yet will easily become a wardrobe classic for years to come.
This bangle from
Trina Turk is in the hot Tangerine Tango color, but is an elegant classic style that will work with your current wardrobe, and your personal style a decade from now. Wear now with a brown wool knit dress and tall boots; come summer this bracelet will be the perfect accent piece to a crisp white sleeveless shirt and tan linen trousers.
While this bracelet retails for close to $100 on other sites,
Amazon has it for $62.99, and it qualifies for Free Super Saver Shipping.
Essie Nail Polish in "Clambake" - Another beauty cult favorite,
Essie polish is a brand favored by top manicurists, and this creamy orange-red color will add intensity to any look.
This winter, wear on your fingers with brights paired with black for a mod effect; come spring show off your tootsies in peeptoes and sandals. $8.00
