Wacky Product of the Week: Phubby

A lot of cool products came out of the CES 2010 (Consumer Electronics Show) event this past week. The horribly named Phubby is not one of them. No, that wasn't a typo of some sort, it really is called a phubby. What exactly is this ingenious piece of gadgety lameness?

Let's get right to it.

Pictured above, the Phubby, is a wrist band with a pocket; a sleeve, if you will, designed to hold your cell phone or iPod. The added feature bonus is that it allows you to "Feel the Vibrations" without scratching your head in utter befuddlement over the location of said vibratory alert. Summed up best by Jacob Schulman on Engadget, "It's advertised as a cubby for your wrist, but it doubles as an opposite-sex repellent." Yes, so fear not wearers of the pocket protector and taped up horn-rimmed glasses, you have a new fashion accessory designed to insure that you remain dateless and uncool for years to come. Seriously though, who thought of this? Oh yeah, the fine folks at South Mill Design did. In their own words:
"Until recently, conveniently carrying a cell phone was this millennium's greatest challenge. Prior generations never encountered the phumble (phone fumble) - a desperate search in a pocket, handbag or briefcase for a ringing electronic device. The Phubby phone cubby conclusively eliminates the phumble by merging new-age fabrics and the anatomical wonders of a kangaroo."
Millennium's greatest challenge? Desperate search? I don't know about you guys, but I never saw finding a way to carry my Crackberry as any kind of insurmountable challenge or long Holy Grail-like search to stop the ringing of an incoming call. If you have been afflicted by phone fumble-itis then I suppose the Phubby is perfect for you. Me, I'll stick to my pocket. Same cheap thrill, fewer looks of ridicule from the masses.
