Priceless Moments: Playing with your Kids

I'm a firm believer in the idea that just about every parent strives to be the best parent they can--even the terrible ones. One of the most important things you can do to be a good parent is spend time with your children. Disneyland, Chuckie Cheese or the arcade may be a great way to keep kids entertained while spending time with them--but while these activities are kid-friendly, they are definitely not wallet-friendly.

A better way to spend time with your kids is by playing sports with them. Here are some sports you can play with your kids that will make for a great bonding experience--and they don't cost much more than just your time:

  • Catch: Every boy grows up and plays catch with their dad at least once. Despite its simplicity, it can be relaxing for the adult and great fun for the kid. Also, since it's so slow-paced, you can have conversations with your kid and use it as an opportunity to know them better. Whether you play with a baseball, football, or medicine ball, you're bound to enjoy playing catch with your kid.

  • Soccer: If you want more of a workout, you can play soccer with your little one. You can take turns playing goalie which is surprisingly fun. For those with a little more time on their hands, you can coach their team and get to meet their friends. You'll get a heckuva of a workout having to deal with all of those little ones--even if you're not actually playing the sport.

  • Basketball: Playing basketball with a second grader can be really fun. There's something that's really satisfying about being able to block any of their shots that you want (although don't recommend actually doing it every time for obvious reasons!). Little kids love playing basketball. You love playing basketball. I love playing basketball. It's a win-win. I remember when my neighbors got a basketball hoop in 6th grade it was the greatest day of life. Getting your own hoop can make it more fun because you can adjust the height so it won't be too high for your child.

If these sports aren't enough you can try out tennis, miniature golf, or even sledding. If you're worried about having to spend too much on equipment, don't. We've got a large selection of Dick's Sporting Goods coupons. So go pick up a ball and take your kid out!
