Ladies, this post is for you!  Once a month, you are gifted with a lovely visitor.  Think about how much trash and money you throw away during that week!  Multiply that by the number of months and years that you will be menstruating.  Having your period costs you money, pain, and even damages the environment.  Don't fret!  There are many options to green your period and keep your wallet full.

Many virgin resources are used to create both tampons and pads, and in production many toxins are created.  I don't know about you, but I don't want toxins in such a delicate part of my body!  That's where alternative menstrual products come in.

Alternative, reusable menstrual products help you save money because after the initial investment, you are set for years!  Whether you prefer pads or tampons, there are alternatives that will meet your needs and preferences.

Alternative menstrual products

Menstrual cups are either silicone or rubber and fit snugly inside.  They are reusable, and you don't have to worry about toxic shock syndrome when using them.  A $25 investment in a menstrual cup will last you years and create no waste outside of manufacturing.  They are comfortable and make you forget you are on your period!

Reusable cloth menstrual pads are an alternative to pads.  You use them, wash them, and that's it!  You can make your own out of flannel or purchase them.  There's nothing to throw away; not to mention you aren't throwing your money away on disposables each month!

Sea sponges are a tampon alternative.  They are made out of all natural sea sponges.  You remove, rinse, and reinsert them.

Greening your period will make you feel better because not only are you saving money, but you are also reducing the amount of waste you create.  It's a win-win situation!  Give it a try, and I'll bet you'll be surprised how you fall in love with reusable menstrual products.
