Recently, Anne Hathaway debuted her new short hairdo and the world gasped in awe and shock. She looks great, but we all know her from The Devil Wears Prada and The Princess Diaries as someone with long, lustrous locks. As it turned out, her publicist reported that her short cut was actually a wig--which probably caused many of her fans to heave a sigh of relief.  I know for certain I can't carry a 'do this short off. But, some of you can.

Shampoos, conditioners, styling products and hair tools can all make a dent in our wallets. Going for a shorter hairstyle not only cuts down on those expenses, but cuts down on styling time as well. Time is money.

Here's a list of ways shorter hair can save you some hard-earned cash.

  1. Less usage of shampoo. Considering that the average bottle of shampoo runs anywhere from $1.79 for a bottle of Suave to $18 for Bumble and Bumble, you will save on the amount of shampoo you use per wash. I usually go through a bottle in a month with my long hair, but with short hair you'd be good to go for at least two months.

  2. Less need for conditioner. It's true. Short locks need less conditioning. They don't get tangled, therefore you only need a pea-sized amount to keep them in tip-top condition. Or forgo conditioner and opt for a leave-in from Garnier Fructis. It smells divine--another plus.

  3. No more curling irons or flat irons. Just wash and go! Pixie cuts like the ones Anne and Emma Watson sport don't need a lot of styling at all. Maybe a bit of gel or hairspray to give it some edge, but you definitely don't need to invest money on expensive irons to get the look you desire. Aussie Instant Freeze Hair Spray is $4.49 and will last you many sprays.

  4. Save on water bill. This is a no-brainer. The less hair you have, the less water you will use to wash it. This could add up to hundreds of dollars a year on your water bill. Cha-ching!

  5. Save on time. As I said before, time is money. If you're running late one day, you can shave off at least 15 minutes of time washing your short hair as opposed to Rapunzel-style hair. No need to shampoo, condition and blow dry. Just use a bit of styling product to tousle and you're set.

How many of you have gone the short hair route? Do you enjoy it more than your long hair days and why?
