The End of the Road for Analog

You've no doubt heard by now about the impending switch from analog to digital as it pertains to your television viewing. Otherwise known as the DTV Conversion, (trust me, it's not as ominous as it sounds), this federally mandated switch was originally scheduled to take place on February 17th of this year. It was pushed back to June 12th to allow everyone a chance to purchase the necessary equipment. With that date fast approaching, here's the no-frills, bottom-line of why this is important to you.

Plainly speaking, TV signals--pretty much anything coming through an old roof antenna--will cease transmitting on June 12th. Digital broadcast signals will provide clearer, sharper pictures and sound quality. All programs will be or have the potential to be in HD or "high definition." To take advantage of this transition you will need to either check your television to see if it is equipped with a digital tuner or acquire a digital-to-analog converter box. If you already own a digital TV then you're all set. If you choose to just get a digital converter box, DTV.gov has resources available to help you locate retailers currently selling them.

One word of caution though, if you decide on the converter box you will get the signal, but the quality of the picture and sound will be lacking. To enjoy the full digital quality, upgrading to an HDTV and looking into a cable or satellite plan is simply a must.

There are many affordable HDTV deals online offering discounts on top brands. MacMall, for example is having a Sony and Samsung HDTV Sale. With MacMall coupons on Savings.com, you can save $100 - $650 instantly plus get a free wall mount. Also, check out our Sony coupons for a deal of up to $500 savings on Bravia HDTVs.

In terms of satellite or cable, many deals offer deep discounts for new and existing customers looking to upgrade. Our Dish Network coupons include a great deal where new customers can get 5 Premium Movie Channels for only 1 cent and a free DVR. You'll be able to watch TV just fine with standard cable or satellite service, but to truly enjoy the difference an HDTV package is a must.

So bottom line, throw out the old rabbit ears! They are going the way of the cassette tape and the VCR. Upgrading to digital will be the only way to view your favorite shows on the tube come June 12, 2009.
