Post-it Notes are great and all, but they're not particularly mobile. Sure, you could stick one to the dashboard of your car (where it would probably peel off in a matter of minutes), but even then it doesn't go everywhere you go. And how are you supposed to remember something when the note's not right in front of your face?

Enter Post-it PopNotes, a new iPhone and iPad app that brings the power of yellow stickies to your smartphone. (Sorry, Android users, it's not available for your platform--yet.)

Note apps are a dime a dozen, but PopNotes is special for a couple reasons. For starters, it's GPS-aware, meaning you can create notes that trigger when you visit a specific location. For example if you need to remember to stop and buy cat litter on your way home, you can set a note to pop up when you get near the grocery store.

That's huge. Other note apps may let you set timed reminders (as does PopNotes), but that's not nearly as effective as location-based reminders.

What's more, PopNotes is social: you can share notes with friends and family members, or even the entire PopNotes community (i.e., everyone who uses the app). Thus, you could push out a "welcome back" note that would appear on a friend's iPhone when she returns home from a trip. Or drop a note at a new restaurant (Yelp-style) that lets others know what you think of it. The possibilities are fairly endless.

As you'd expect from an app like this, your notes can consist of finger-traced drawings, typed text, or a combination of the two. You can also choose between nine paper colors for each note.

And I saved the best part for last: Post-it PopNotes is free. And not "free for the first five notes and $20/month thereafter," but free, period. That's awesome.

You do have to sign up for a Post-it account (which you can do right on your device), but that seems like a small price to pay for this kind of convenience. My bigger gripe is that you can't edit a note after you've created it. That's a minor hassle, but I hope 3M will correct it in the next update.

In the meantime, this is a killer way to leverage your iDevice's GPS capabilities. Once you start using location-aware apps like this, you'll wonder how you survived without them.
