With unemployment numbers higher than ever, millions of people are searching for a new career. How are they doing this, you may ask? While there will always be people who search the classified ads of their local newspaper, the majority are using the internet.

If you don't know the first thing about searching for a job online, the following tips should point you in the right direction:

  1. Start with the most popular sites. They include: Monster.com, Yahoo! HotJobs, and The Ladders. Not only can you search for positions on all three of these sites, but you also have the ability to upload a resume so that employers can find you. This is a great way to get your feet wet!
  2. Visit company websites. While many companies list openings on third party services (such as those listed above), some pass this by and use their own website to advertise. To take full advantage, make a list of the companies that you would like to work for. From there, visit each website's "employment" or "jobs" section. Most of the time you will be able to search for and apply for open positions. At the very least, you will be able to forward your resume for consideration.
  3. Use LinkedIn. If you do not have a profile on this social networking site, something is wrong. With this service you can connect with past employers and coworkers, while also making contact with those who may be hiring. The more connections you have on LinkedIn the better chance you have of finding an open position.

If you are out of work, use the internet to search for a new job. By following the three tips above, you will greatly increase your chance of success. At the very least, you will feel as if you are on the right track.
