Money Saving Tips
A garage sale is that event that you seemingly cannot avoid every
weekend morning when you are driving around and see dozens of signs with
arrows pointing you towards a treasure trove of another's old goods for
sale on their front lawn.
Some people love garage sales while
others absolutely hate them. The big difference usually is the people
who love them know how to throw a successful sale and raise a lot of
money from it, while the ones who do not make a lot of money from the
sale often despise them.
So with these helpful tips you should
be on your way to throwing a great garage sale:
- Pick a date for a sale: If you're in a military town, the first of them month when checks are issued usually work best. Otherwise look for non-holiday weekend mornings when the weather is clear.
- Signage is always very important: Craft up a big sign with proper arrows and directions that are clearly visible to somebody while they drive by. There is nothing more annoying than not being able to see where the sale is located and then the passerby becomes just that--a passer by.
- Figure out which household goods you want to get rid of.
- Do not sell anything that you wouldn't feel comfortable buying yourself such as ripped and stained clothes and broken toys that may not be safe.
- Polish and clean up all jewelry to make it look appealing for the buyers.
- Get little tags to mark each item with a price and try to group items together for bulk selling to get rid of more items and to make more money.
- Have proper change in both coins and lots of bills in 1, 5 and 10 dollar denominations.
- Get out the tables and sheets to lay the items on.
- Bake cookies, brownies and make lemonade to get the kids involved and keep the kids who come with their parents occupied to give them more shopping time which equals more sales.
- Advertise: This is very important because without exposure you will
have less buyers. Use the free online classifieds, craigslist
g-sale section, and garage
sale tracker and their iPhone application
- If you live in a large neighborhood it's always great to get the others
involved since they will help bring more people and create a larger
variety for the shoppers.
- Have fun and whatever you do not sell you can always donate to local charities or Goodwill store
If you follow the above steps there is no reason why you won't have a successful rummage sale.
