Tips to Save Money When Buying Beauty Products

Cosmetics can get really expensive, especially if you favor higher priced name brands. A recent article reported that Estee Lauder Group (which manufactures 27 brands including Clinique, MAC, Origins, and Smashbox) has raised the prices of its cosmetic brands by eight to ten percent on average. These prices increases may not have an effect on some of us, but if you're on a tight budget being able to save a few extra bucks matters. Nevertheless, you can still be a better beauty shopper.

These are just a few tip on how you can save some money and make the most out of your cosmetic purchases:
Beauty Rewards Programs
  • Drugstore.com Dollars - The program combines purchases you make on Drugstore.com and Beauty.com. It's free to join and you receive a 5 percent credit for every dollar you spend per quarter on eligible purchases.
  • CVS Extracare Beauty Club - It's also free to sign up and you get a one-time beauty shopping pass for 10 percent off. You earn $5 ExtraBucks for every $50 spent on qualifying products and $3 ExtraBucks on your birthday. Qualifying products include cosmetics, fragrances, hair products, skin care, sun care, and even hosiery.
  • Bloom.com - I've raved about this beauty social networking site in a previous blog. They now carry over a hundred brands and you get 10% back on all your purchases. You also get freebies with every order containing trial size samples, mid-size samples, and full size items.

Ditch Going to the Store

Buying cosmetics online can often be cheaper than buying retail in person. It's easier to do a price comparison on the internet to find the best deal on products you use. However, be aware of shipping charges -- that awesome deal you found on a tube of mascara might not be so great once the shipping charges apply. Depending on where you live, you can also avoid paying sales tax when you shop online. Beauty.com currently charges sales tax on orders shipped to California, Connecticut, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, and Washington. Skinstore.com charges a sales tax on orders shipped to California, Ohio and Washington.

Get Free Samples When You Can

The next time you're at the department store, visit the beauty counters and ask for samples from brands or products you use. Often times, they'll have samples of the latest products so you'll get a chance to try something new. Just don't get lured into spending a certain amount of money to get freebies. You could just end up wasting your money on something you don't even need. Places like Sephora always gives free samples without a minimum purchase.

Make the Most Out of What You Already Have

Get into the habit of using up what you already have before buying anything new. You can extend the life of your lipstick by scraping what's left of it into a container or an old lip gloss bottle. You can combine it with other shades or make it into a gloss by adding some Vaseline. If your mascara is running low or starts to dry up, place it in a glass of warm water or heat it with your hair dryer to loosen it up.
