Where to Find Cheap Pet Food and Other Discount Supplies

Most of us who have pets consider them to be more than just our pets. They are family or “kids” and we only want the best for our furry kids. Owning a pet comes with lots of expenses such as vet bills, food, supplies and toys. But you don’t have to spend a fortune to take care of your pet.

I’ll break down the best places to find deals without breaking the bank. Target

Target is known for having deals already, and it’s no different when you’re shopping for your pet. Cans of Fancy Feast run around 50 cents a can compared to Ralph’s where they are around 70 cents. They also carry cat litter for way cheaper than Petco. I found the same brand of litter for $7.99 as opposed to $11.99 at Petco. $4 in savings sure does add up. The only thing about Target is that it’s a bit limited in terms of selection, but if you can find what you want, I would check here first.

Amazon

This online marketplace has a huge selection of pet needs. From food to supplies and toys, you really can’t beat the selection. Amazon carries tons of toys for dogs and cats at discounted prices. I found a bunch of hard to find toys for my cat at lower prices than other places. Also, you can take advantage of the free one month membership to Amazon Prime and get free 2-day shipping on thousands of items. It’s really exciting to get stuff for cheap and not have to pay for shipping! In general, I’ve found food to not be any cheaper than Target or your local supermarket. Make sure you always comparison shop.

Doctors Fosters and Smith

Drs Fosters and Smith is a great place to buy pet medication. My friend actually recommended this site to me to buy flea medication for cheap. I was able to get a 4-pack box of Advantage II for $30.99. Other places online carry them for $43.99 or more. Also, you get free shipping on all orders of medication with our coupon so you don’t even have to worry about hitting the $49 order minimum.

Supermarkets

You know when you’re grocery shopping at your local market and you happen to stroll down the pet aisle? Well, make sure you look at their pet food sales. I find some markets to have deep discounts on pet food. I’ve actually been going to Ralph’s to stock up on Fancy Feast because they have it for 47 cents a can with your Ralph’s card. The sales last longer than a week too because these cans have been on sale for a few months now. I’m not complaining and I hope they keep the prices.

Vaccines

Getting shots for your pet can add up. A typical visit to the vet for shots can run you from $80 to $125. However, many pet stores are running low cost vaccine clinics on a monthly or biweekly basis. Centinela Feed & Pet Supplies and Petco are two chains that do so. You can get shots for $25 which is a huge savings when you have to get annual vaccines. Make sure to get there early, because there will be lines.

What are some of your secret places that you shop for your pet’s needs?

i definitely compare prices because they can vary quite a bit! there was a discount pet shop i would go to in the bay area but i haven’t found anything comparable in LA. sometimes pet stores will offer quantity discounts. also, http://www.petfooddirect.com is a good site to check out as well if you are able to buy pet food in bulk, and they frequently offer coupons.

@ ChuckG- I haven’t been to a Walmart in 15 years so can’t really chime in about pet stuff. Checked out their stuff online and they seem to carry some budget items, but once again, def comparison shop!

I don’t have any pets so I can’t offer any insight on which discount places are best. The only thing I can think of is that daytime TV ad with Betty White….but I think that ad was for medications.

Costco is also a great place to get good deals on pet supplies. The house brand food (Kirkland) is high quality and inexpensive. I also buy dog toys, treats, flea medication, etc. there.
