Carmageddon Deals in the Los Angeles Area

If you live in southern California, you’ve no doubt heard about next weekend’s “Carmageddon,” when a 10-mile stretch of the 405 freeway will be closed for construction. From July 15th through 17th, the 405 North will be closed between the 10 and the 101. Los Angeles area residents aren’t too optimistic about the impending freeway closure, which you’ve probably surmised from the fact that we jumped to the Armageddon comparison almost immediately. There is, however, at least one upside. Many local businesses are offering deals throughout the weekend, and there’s even free public transportation available in some areas.

Read on to discover the best deals to help you survive Carmageddon.

Food/ Drink

Santa Monica’s Locanda del Lago will offer a specially priced Carmageddon menu from July 15th through 17th. Options include select stuzzichini, or small plates, for $4.05 (regularly priced $5-10), and themed cocktails for $8/ glass, or $20/ liter.

Also in Santa Monica, Wilshire Restaurant is offering a four-course meal for $40.05, July 15th-18th. Click the link for more details and to view the menu.

SusieCakes in West Hollywood is offering two cupcakes for the price of one on July 16th only.

Most astonishingly, Wine Expo in Santa Monica is offering 40.5% off your tab in the tasting bar (not the store) from July 15th-18th. If that sounds too good to be true, don’t worry–I thought so too, so I called them to verify. Select items in the store will also be discounted.

Intercontinental Hotel Los Angeles is offering their King Superior rooms for $169/night from July 14th through July 18th. Follow the link to view details. Call (800) 329-1010 and mention “Carmageddon 2011″ to receive the special rate.

The Hyatt Regency Century Plaza is offering select rooms for $199/night. Click through the link or email or for details.

Hotel Palomar in Westwood, a pet-friendly boutique hotel, is offering guests $40.05 dining credit in their BLVD 16 Restaurant, among other specials. Click the link or call them at (310) 475-8711 for details.

On the extravagant side of things, Shutters on the Beach, a Santa Monica beachfront luxury hotel, is offering a 3-night stay for $405 per night. That’s still incredibly expensive, but it’s a significant discount from their normal rate of $610/night. If you were looking to splurge on a gorgeous beachside hotel this summer, here’s your opportunity. Call them at 310-458-0030for more details.

On July 15th and 16th, the transportation authority will be offering free fares on 26 bus lines along major routes on the west side and in the San Fernando Valley. Additionally, the Red, Purple and Orange line subways will offer free service.

If you’re flying in or out of town, Prime Time Shuttle is offering shuttle service from LAX to anywhere in the San Fernando Valley for $20/ person (one way) and $10 for each additional person, on July 16th and 17th.

UPDATE 7/14: If you want to get out of town for the weekend, Amtrak is offering 20% off train fare to Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, plus various restaurant and activity discounts, July 15th through 18th.

JetBlue’s Carmageddon deal, a $4 flight from Long Beach to Burbank, has already sold out.

In the Valley, a group of shops at the Ventura Blvd/ Woodman Ave intersection is having a “Carmageddon Block Party. If you buy anything at one participating business, show your receipt to any other participating business to receive a 10% discount on your purchase.  Participating businesses include: Illuminations, Pane Dolce, the UPS Store, and The Massage Place.

Take a yoga class at Yogis Anonymous in downtown Santa Monica for $10 instead of the normal $17. This price is for a single class and is valid on July 16th and 17th. Follow the link for more details.

If your dog needs a place to wait out the traffic, Animal Kingdom in Santa Monica is offering $4.05 off their regular day rate of $32. Click through the link or call them at (310) 392-4074 for details.

@margotdent – I know :? that Google maps mashup has a tab for the east side, but there are only a few deals, I guess because the east side will be less affected by the 405 thing than the west wide will. At least we have that!

I just read that on 7/16 Jet Blue is offering $4 flights between Burbank and Long Beach. It’s a great alternative to braving the freeways, because I’ve never, ever heard someone describe flying as time-consuming or frustrating.

I was too far away for this to be of concern to me, which I am thankful. Glad it wasn’t as bad as everyone thought it would be.
