More Ways to Save on Your Video Game Habit

So welcome back to the blog Formerly Known As The Yasar and Guy Traveling Video Game Smart Alec Review Show. Or The FKATYGTVGSAR Show as we like to call it around here. (Rolls right off the tongue doesn’t it?)

Lame attempts at humor aside, I promised you guys a review of Crysis 2 this week and by goodness I aim to keep my word. Just, uh, not this week. Life happened, as it is want to do, and my ability to zone out and game to bring you the best review of Crysis 2 on the net simply fell victim to the limits of time. So, mea culpa and I promise to get that up next week for sure.

Instead of a review, I’m going to talk more about discounted gaming options. In particular, I’m going to give my two cents on recent Sony and Microsoft discount video game releases via the Playstation Network and Xbox Live. Sony’s Welcome Package rolled out earlier this month following the network hack felt round the world. As part of the big PSN “We’re sorry” Sony is currently offering two free video games for all who were registered users pre-attack. That’s two games per account. Now, if you have more than one account set up on your system, well, let’s just say you could work around the two per account limit and get four or all of the games for free. But, you didn’t hear that from me right?

The downloadable PS3 games are Dead Nation, iNFAMOUS (love, love, love that game!), LittleBigPlanet, Super Stardust HD, and Wipeout HD +Fury. The free-to-purchase PSP game options are LittleBigPlanet PSP, ModNation Racers, Pursuit Force and Killzone Liberation.

There’s a bit of diversity there, offering something for gamers of varying tastes. This is a great way to try out games you maybe passed on when they first debuted. One downside to this is that you may feel left out of the fun if you already own or completed these games.

As I said, I love iNFAMOUS and am going to pick up iNFAMOUS 2 this week, but didn’t want to waste a download on a game I already finished and traded in for a newer game. I took the opportunity to download Dead Nation and LittleBigPlanet instead. The latter is a game I’ve wanted to check out for awhile now. Since it was free, I thought, “Why Not.” The other game I grabbed was Dead Nation. I mean…zombies…HELLO!!! It’s pretty hard to mess up a game with zombies, so that was an easy choice for me.

Even though you can’t beat free, there are other solid video game savings to be found elsewhere on the Playstation Network this week. EA (Electronic Arts) is offering 3 On 3 NHL Arcade which has a metascore of 66 on Metacritic. It is available for $3.00. Madden NFL Arcade, set at $5.00 is a simple, yet fun, casual version of EA Sports popular Madden football series. It reminds me a lot of the old NFL Blitz series, complete with flashy moves, lots of taunting, and a hyped up tempo. Here is a quick snippet of the game in action:

Not to be outdone, a quick trip over to the Xbox Marketplace Deal of the Week page shows us that they too are giving members some sweet deals to choose from. The catch, however, is that these are only for Gold level members.

There are several titles listed there all at reduced Gold Exclusive Microsoft Points prices ranging from 200 to 600 points. In non-gamer terms, that’s $2.50 – $7.50. In all instances, the savings value is that these games from Xbox Live will cost you half the amount of points it would cost with a Silver membership.

Well, that’s it for this week. Join me right back here next time as I actually, finally will have my review of Crysis 2 up for your viewing pleasure. Until that fateful day true believers, be sure to follow all of my musings on all things video game related on Twitter @SavingsGCapes.
