Savings Secrets: Don’t let online advertising spoil your gift this year
Did you shop online for your gifts this year? You’ll want to be careful and not let online advertisers spoil your gift-giving this year. Through a type of advertising known as “ad retargeting”, items you’ve recently viewed or bought can show up in your ads on Facebook, Google, and pretty much any other website that you browse in the next few days.
So if you’re sharing your computer with the “giftee,” this could mean bad news! Talk about the “ad that stole Christmas!”
But hold on, no need to get all grinchy. There are a couple of ways you can get around this issue. You can do one or all of the following if you like.
1. Use private browsing when you do your online shopping.
2. Use a personal account on a shared computer.
3. Clear your cache and cookies after making online purchases. This way the cookies stored on your computer that allow for ad retargeting are gone.
4. Browse the retailer’s website and click on a few different products after making your purchase. This will change the types of ads targeted towards you.
There. Now you don’t need to worry about any ads spoiling those surprises. Happy Holidays ya’ll!
