Savings Secrets: How to get organized and save money for the holidays


In celebration of #HolidApril, we’re talking all day about how you can save money for the holidays. Every year the holiday shopping season seems to start earlier and earlier, so we might as well start out in April! One of the best ways to save money is by planning ahead. 

Getting started in April means more time to plan, save money and have an amazing holiday this year! Here are a few tips to get you saving money for the holidays. 

1. Get a piece of paper, the note app on your phone, Word document, Excel spreadsheet….whatever helps you get organized and make a list of the people you want to buy gifts for this year. Whether you only shop for five people or 200, it’s best to have your list when getting organized and planning out your shopping strategy. 

2. Once you have your list of people, start writing down some ideas of what each person likes or would like. Once you have this, the rest is a piece of Christmas Cake!  3. Subscribe to your favorite deal sites….on Facebook, via email, Twitter…whatever helps you stay connected and see the regular deals – Do It!! Staying connected and up to date on both in-store and online deals is what will allow you to save the most money! 

4. When a deal pops up that would be a perfect gift and is within your budget…go for it! Don’t hesitate, just do it! As long as you’re not going into debt over the gift, it’s best to get the deals as they happen. Spend a few dollars now or twice as much or more a few days before Christmas….that’s the choice in front of you. 

5. Have a good storage area for all of your gifts. I use big boxes or storage bins hidden in my closet. Some day the kids are going to get old enough and realize that’s where I hide all the gifts, so I suppose I’ll need to get smarter with organization one of these days. 

Planning ahead can mean the difference between paying $50-$100 for all your Christmas shopping, or paying $1,000. One year I had wonderful, meaningful gifts for four different people that I had spent a total of $3 on all of them. That’s what planning ahead and watching for the deals can do for you!
