Yes, you read that title correctly. This may seem an odd topic for a money-saving blog. But after writing about the least expensive wine gifts for dear old dad two years in a row, it occurred to me that not everybody is looking to economize this time of year. Maybe you and your siblings are pooling your resources. Maybe you recently got a big promotion at work. Maybe you just think Dad deserves something extra special this year, cost be darned. Whatever the case, the following gifts are sure to delight Dad and his palate and make for a very Happy Father's Day! Read More …

Some time back I re-watched all the Sex and the City episodes and was inspired to write the blog Wine Gifting Your Girlfriends Sex and the City Style. This is what happens when I have writer's block:  I am forced to turn to the television for prospective topics.

I regret to inform you all that I have been very behind on my daytime TV viewing and watched a Days of Our Lives marathon over the weekend.

Read on for money lessons I've learned from DOOL! Read More …

Party Planning: Cooking For a Crowd For Less (Part Two)

under Money Saving Tips

Hey everyone, remember that great video we posted some time ago called Cooking For a Crowd For Less ? (No? That's OK. I hardly remember it and I'm 99% certain that's me in just about every frame.) Well, we've gone and made a sequel, just in time to help you out with all your Spring and Summer party planning needs.

Check out what happens when I violate just about every common sense rule from the first video while preparing for my annual Easter party. Will the food be ready in time? Will people come? Is a chocolate bunny cake every bit as delicious as a white one?

Spoiler alert:  yes it was, yes we had 22 people attend the party, and yes, even more so! Read More …

Earlier this week, our CEO Loren Bendele told you all about the brand new deal personalization feature here at Savings.com. I'm sure most people would prefer to look at deals tailored just for them rather than wading through countless superfluous offers. But maybe some folks are worried about how long the whole personalization process will take.

Worry no longer! Check out the following video in which I demo just how quick and easy personalizing your own shopping experience can be. Read More …

Wine Deal of the Day Sites: Which One is Right For You?

By HSimas

under Shop Smarter

It seems like every day there is a new wine "deal of the day" site, promising high quality wines at fire sale prices. The competition is great for us consumers, but all those choices can be overwhelming. I mean, who in the world has time to wade through all these emails and websites, searching for the best wines at the best deals?

Lucky for you, people like me are paid to find the best deals on stuff, including wine! (And really, lucky for me too, considering how many people are unemployed and all the less pleasant things I could be doing to earn a buck...) I've gathered info on five of the most popular wine DOD sites so that you can make an informed decision on what deserves some of the valuable real estate in your inbox.

Which wine deal of the day site is right for you? Read on, my thirsty friend! Read More …

Cheapest Weight Loss Diet Tips of All Time

By HSimas

under Odds and Ends

Let's get this out of the way: I am not a dietitian. I am not an expert in any way, shape or form on healthy living and weight loss. What I am is an expert on reading magazines about healthy living and weight loss. Man, can I put away articles about losing weight! I've been doing so for a few decades now, and you, dear reader, are about to benefit from the knowledge I've culled from hours and hours of reading about taking the stairs instead of the elevator and eating apples with peanut butter. Which sounds disgusting, by the way. Has anyone ever actually eaten an apple with peanut butter?

What makes my list of healthy living and diet tips so special? They all cost nothing, or next to nothing. No Bosu balls or exotic/expensive grocery lists here. Just common sense tips at bargain basement prices. Let the reading about weight loss commence! Read More …

Travel Deals: San Diego on a Budget - Where to Eat

By HSimas

Did you know that over 90% of the animals at the San Diego Zoo eat specialized reddish-orange biscuits to make sure they are getting all the nutrition they need? It's true! You can see said biscuits in the accompanying  photo I've entitled "Monkey Has This Many Biscuits."

Chances are, when you visit San Diego, you're going to want a little more variety than reddish-orange biscuits at every meal. You've been at Sea World all day, you swam at the beach, the kids are screaming that they're hungry. So what's for dinner? Read on for tips on delicious, reasonably priced eats in the San Diego area. Welcome to Part Deux of San Diego on a Budget. If you read Part One on where to stay, you've already got your accommodations all taken care of. This week we'll concentrate on things for the frugal traveler to do in America's Finest City**.

Honestly, with such a walkable city and miles of scenic beaches at your disposal, you probably don't even need me for ideas on what to do. But as a frequent traveler to San Diego, I feel it my duty to let you in on some of my favorite places.

** No offense to anyone with intense civic pride. I googled "san diego nickname" and that's what I got, folks. Read More …

Travel Deals: San Diego on a Budget - Where to Stay

By HSimas

under Money Saving Tips

Three or four times a year, my husband and I make the short trip south to go visit our friends at the San Diego Zoo. And by friends, I mean baby gorillas and pandas and such. We've gone so many times during our tenure here in Southern California, we consider ourselves experts on the San Diego weekend getaway.

Planning a trip to San Diego? Please, put our knowledge to good use. Note that while I do not have children myself, I have been informed by one of my nephews that I am "98% kid" (In case you are wondering, I was told the only issues preventing me from being 100% kid are that I have a job and drive a car). So these tips should be useful to both the child-blessed and blissfully childless.

This week I will concentrate on Where to Stay. Read More …

New Year's Resolutions that Don't Cost a Thing

under Odds and Ends

I don't want to point any fingers here, but there are those of you out there who are avoiding the time-honored tradition of New Year's resolutions simply because you're a little short on cash. You think just because you can't afford a fancy new gym membership or a Costco-sized supply of Nicoderm that you are off the hook for even the slightest hint of self-improvement.

Sorry Charlie, but there are plenty of little things to do this New Year that can make significant positive impacts on your health and life. And the ones I'm about to share cost nothing to almost nothing. Some will even save you some cash. And some could even be described as pleasant, I swear.

(When I say "girlfriends," I don't mean like going steady. I mean like "You go, girlfriend!" kind of girlfriends...)

Let's face it, ladies. At some point, exchanging Sephora gift cards with your girlfriends can get a little boring. And attempting to buy clothes for friends can lead to all kinds of size confusion and awkwardness. When you've exhausted all beauty possibilities, why not buy your friends a little vino? Matched to their personality types, of course. Read More …
