Packing Light

After my luggage was lost on my last flight, I vowed to try to make my next trip with just a carry-on. This might sound like a small feat, but for someone as indecisive as me, it isn't. ("What if I want to wear the boots instead of the flats? I'll bring both. And the t-straps. Just in case.") Sure, I packed lighter when I was younger, but I usually ended up looking like a grungy teenager.

Since tomorrow I'm headed to San Francisco for Save Up, I grilled friends, scoured the web for packing tips, and hit up fashion magazines for the best advice on packing light while looking right. As always, I found a way to make sure your biggest travel expense is your plane ticket, not your wardrobe.

Now that "green is the new black," everyone seems to be jumping on board the eco-friendly bandwagon. A lot of companies pay lip service to the eco-cause, but which beauty lines put their money where their mouth is? There are a few conscious companies who are making sure they aren't mucking up the environment while they're beautifying you.

From companies with biodegradable packaging to recycling incentives that score you new goodies, find out how to make sure your old bottles, tins, and tubes don't end up in a landfill. Here are some tips to reduce, reuse, and recycle old beauty products and maybe score a few freebies in the process, so some of that "green" can stay in your wallet.

Something about fall makes me want to shop. Maybe it's a lingering effect of years of Back-to-School shopping, maybe it's the crisp autumn air and the unfortunate fact that a moth ate my three favorite sweaters sometime between now and the last cold snap, or maybe it's the crazy fall deals that abound.

You don't need a new wardrobe (or pay raise) to look stylish this fall--just score these five key pieces to update your look with three easy tips to keep it on the cheap.

Halloween is a great time to go all out with wild costumes and makeup--but it's not Halloween yet. So why are you wearing a mask? You're not? Well, your clown costume is really cute. Oh, it's not a costume? Um...

Yes, bold is great sometimes. I'm in full support of the over-the-top looks from Dolly Parton, Charo and the cast of Cirque du Soleil, but there's no need to spend so much time and money on an everyday look. If "clown face" IS your everyday look, check out our Halloween deals. If not, here are a few tips for making yourself UNDER, so you have a natural, confident look that won't have strangers offering you mini candy bars.

It's Murphy's Law: Every time I have an exciting night planned, my skin breaks out. Next thing I know I'm accessorizing with a big, honking zit. I started thinking about important nights out--your high school reunion, a hot date, a special event--and all the last minute snafus that can spoil your look and your mood. How do you deal with these unexpected annoyances?

I asked some of my Savings.com colleagues for their fast, easy fixes for these common problems.

Fashion Week Roundup: Next Season's Looks for Last Season's Prices

The eccentric designs. The stoic models stalking down the runway. The eager celebs in the front row. Anna Wintour. Last week, New York got swept up in its most fabulous tradition: Fashion Week. Spring/Summer 2010 saw some new trends, as well as more of the same. Like a villain in a horror movie, the prevalence of neon colors suggest the 1980s throwback trend simply won't die. Likewise, feminine, cinched waists suggest the MadMen style meme is going to last well into 2010. Over all, it was an impressive week of wearable and flattering designs.

Even Fashion Week wasn't immune to the effects of the recession--many of the styles on the runway were grey, black or neutral. Designers like Marc Jacobs showcased their lower cost lines in New York last week. Throughout 2009, fashion shows, once a paragon of decadence and frivolity (for better or worse) have scaled back, having fewer lavish parties and more pret-a-porter looks.

Although it wasn't as ostentatious as in years past, New York Fashion Week had no shortage of eye popping, drool-worthy styles. I scoured the pictures from fashion week AND hunted for the best deals, so you can look 2010 in 2009 on a dime.

At first glance, "Cleansing Oil" sounds like an oxymoron. How can an oil clean your skin? Won't it leave it greasier than when you started?

Not so with DHC Deep Cleansing Oil, which melted my makeup and left my skin baby soft and super fresh.

You want to look polished and put together, but you don't have the time or money to spend hours in a salon or spa? Not surprising: In this recession, many women are just not up for paying salon and spa prices.

The result?

Some wild locks, mangled brows and seriously scaly skin. No need, when a spa or salon quality treatment is as close as your bathroom. With a few products (brought to you for less with money-saving coupons!) and a little guidance, you can do many of your favorite spa splurges at home.

Here are a few tips for at home pampering:

The Tao of Joan

Last week I wrote about the fabulous style of TV's best married couple, Don and Betty Draper of AMC's Mad Men. But many ladies out there don't identify with tortured housewife, Betty; it's office vamp (now office vamp/tortured housewife) Joan Holloway (Christina Hendricks) who's inspired Holloway blogs, retro fashion trends, new-found confidence and many a dye job, no doubt, with her fierce signature style.

Even if you don't have Ms. Holloway's--I mean Mrs. Greg Harris'--dangerous curves, you can still steal her style and attitude--for less.

Here are a few style and beauty tips inspired by Joan's best quotes on the show.

Free to Be a Gift for Me: Ten Best Gifts With Purchase

Gotta stock up on new lotions and potions? Why not score a freebie while you're at it?

The shelf life of most cosmetics is three to four months. With that turn around, you're likely to buy cosmetics and skin care several times a year, and it's not exactly the kind of stuff you want to buy on consignment. Many popular skin care, perfume, and makeup brands seldom have sales, so how can a frugal beauty junkie get the most bang for the buck?

Gifts with purchase, of course! Here's why GWPs are my favorite kind of deal:

Summertime is upon us: time for barbecues, beach days, a slew of summer nuptials--and bad footwear. You shouldn't have to sacrifice comfort for fashion, but there are ways to look stylish in shorts. Put away the athletic shoes, keep your Tevas on the trail, and for heaven's sake put down the Crocs.

Here's a guy's guide for summer footwear beyond the flip flop, each for under $50.

Best Drugstore Beauty Secrets

By MBonesdealpro

As a kid, I loved digging through my mom's makeup and beauty products and giving myself "makeovers." I may have looked like a clown afterward, but I did make a few observations. There was always a bottle of Cetaphil cleanser and a package of Coty Airspun powder on her shelf.

When I got older (and my makeup less clown-like...hopefully), I asked Mom to tell me why she always bought these bargain products when the rest of her makeup was Chanel and Bobbi Brown. She told me that her grandmother could always make herself look flawless in a flash with a quick dusting of Coty. And the Cetaphil had become a staple of her medicine cabinet after her dermatologist claimed it was the best cleanser on the market, period.

Through the years, I've found my own buried treasure at my local drugstore. Avalon Organics Lavender cream keeps my face smooth and soft without any chemicals. And Skin Musk, yes Skin Musk in the cheesy early '90's packaging, is still the fragrance that makes people ask what I'm wearing in elevators.

I got to wondering what other drugstore secrets my beauty-conscious friends had in their bathrooms.

Money Savings "I Dos"

Last week, I blogged about how the recession is making many couples weigh their wedding day options. Their choice: a traditional pricey wedding with all the trimmings, or a quick, intimate elopement to save cash. For those of you who want your wedding cake--and hope to eat it, too--here are a few tips and deals that'll keep your big day from having a big price tag.

The Big (Expensive) Day

A recent study suggested that the average wedding costs upwards of $29,000. Even Jim and Pam of NBC's The Office discussed a quickie courthouse wedding to save money and trouble.

You know the recession is really hitting home when America's favorite fictional couple are feeling the crunch. Now that jobs are scarce and people are tightening their belts, is the traditional wedding the next victim of the economic downturn?
