The Holidays are approaching and that means you no doubt have a
few eggnog laden nights in your future. It's the time of year where
you'll be hopping from party to party, trimming trees, giving
thanks, collecting gelt, or just being merry with friends. But with
all the expenses of gift giving and travel, who wants to add a
Holiday party wardrobe to your list of expenses?
Not you, Savvy Saver!
With just a few simple accessories, you can wear the same basic
dress to any occasion. Save money and time--and look great doing
it.
The Holiday season is upon us. Time for mistletoe, eggnog,

receiving bath products. They are always useful, they're not

After my luggage was lost on my last flight, I vowed to try to
make my next trip with just a carry-on. This might sound like a
small feat, but for someone as indecisive as me, it isn't.
("What if I want to wear the boots instead of the flats? I'll
bring both. And the t-straps. Just in case.") Sure, I packed
lighter when I was younger, but I usually ended up looking like a
grungy teenager.
Since tomorrow I'm headed to San Francisco for Save Up, I
grilled friends, scoured the web for packing tips, and hit up fashion magazines for the
best advice on packing light while looking right. As always, I
found a way to make sure your biggest travel expense is your plane
ticket, not your wardrobe.
Halloween is this weekend which
means it's the time to embrace all that is dark, macabre and
spooky. And though everyone might bust out their best Monster Mash,
there are some spooky icons who get ghoulish 24/7.

Dead" into your everyday? Pick your profile poison: Are you a

Halloween is over. And of course, dear reader, I've also got

Now that "green is the new
black," everyone seems to be jumping on board the eco-friendly
bandwagon. A lot of companies pay lip service to the eco-cause, but
which beauty lines put their money where their mouth is? There are
a few conscious companies who are making sure they
aren't mucking up the environment while they're beautifying
you.
From companies with biodegradable
packaging to recycling incentives that score you new goodies, find
out how to make sure your old bottles, tins, and tubes don't end up
in a landfill. Here are some tips to reduce, reuse, and recycle old
beauty products and maybe score a few freebies in the process, so some of that
"green" can stay in your wallet.
Something about fall makes me
want to shop. Maybe it's a lingering effect of years of
Back-to-School shopping, maybe it's the crisp autumn air and the
unfortunate fact that a moth ate my three favorite sweaters
sometime between now and the last cold snap, or maybe it's the
crazy fall deals that abound.
You don't need a new wardrobe
(or pay raise) to look stylish this fall--just score these
five key pieces to update your look with three easy tips to keep it
on the cheap.
Halloween is a great time to go
all out with wild costumes and makeup--but it's not Halloween yet.
So why are you wearing a mask? You're not? Well, your clown costume
is really cute. Oh, it's not a costume? Um...
Yes, bold is great sometimes. I'm
in full support of the over-the-top looks from Dolly Parton, Charo
and the cast of Cirque du Soleil, but there's no need to spend so
much time and money on an everyday look. If "clown face" IS your
everyday look, check out our Halloween
deals. If not, here are a few tips for making yourself UNDER,
so you have a natural, confident look that won't have strangers
offering you mini candy bars.
It's Murphy's Law: Every time I
have an exciting night planned, my skin breaks out. Next thing I
know I'm accessorizing with a big, honking zit. I started thinking
about important nights out--your high school reunion, a hot date, a
special event--and all the last minute snafus that can spoil your
look and your mood. How do you deal with these unexpected
annoyances?
I asked some of my Savings.com
colleagues for their fast, easy fixes for these common
problems.
The eccentric designs. The stoic
models stalking down the runway. The eager celebs in the front row.
Anna Wintour. Last week, New York got swept up in its most fabulous
tradition: Fashion Week. Spring/Summer 2010 saw some new
trends, as well as more of the same. Like a villain in a horror
movie, the prevalence of neon colors suggest the 1980s throwback
trend simply won't die. Likewise, feminine, cinched waists suggest
the MadMen
style meme is going to last well into 2010. Over all, it was an
impressive week of wearable and flattering
designs.
Even Fashion Week wasn't immune
to the effects of the recession--many of the styles on the runway
were grey, black or neutral. Designers like Marc Jacobs showcased
their lower cost lines in New York last week. Throughout 2009,
fashion shows, once a paragon of decadence and frivolity (for
better or worse) have scaled back, having fewer lavish parties
and more pret-a-porter looks.
Although it wasn't as
ostentatious as in years past, New York Fashion Week had no
shortage of eye popping, drool-worthy styles. I scoured the
pictures from fashion week AND hunted for the best deals, so you
can look 2010 in 2009 on a dime.
You want to look polished and put together, but
you don't have the time or money to spend hours in a salon or spa?
Not surprising: In this recession, many women are just not up for
paying salon and spa prices.
The result?
Some wild locks, mangled brows and seriously
scaly skin. No need, when a spa or salon quality treatment is as
close as your bathroom. With a few products (brought to you for
less with money-saving coupons!) and a little guidance,
you can do many of your favorite spa splurges at home.
Last week I wrote about the fabulous style of
TV's best married couple, Don and Betty
Draper of AMC's Mad Men. But many ladies out there don't
identify with tortured housewife, Betty; it's office vamp (now
office vamp/tortured housewife) Joan Holloway (Christina
Hendricks) who's inspired Holloway blogs, retro
fashion trends, new-found
confidence and many a dye job, no doubt, with her fierce
signature style.
Even if you don't have Ms. Holloway's--I mean Mrs. Greg
Harris'--dangerous curves, you can still steal her style and
attitude--for less.
Here are a few style and beauty tips inspired by Joan's best
quotes on the show.
Mad Men is back with a third season of deception,
adultery, cynicism, humor and fabulous fashion. The 1960s styles
seen on the popular AMC drama have influenced designers,
tastemakers and the frugal fashionable alike with Don and Betty
fast becoming fashion icons.
Dying to dress like a Draper? Here's how to look
drop-dead Draper for less.
After nearly a month of wearing your dingy old
bikini, maybe it's time for an upgrade. As summer fades into Indian
summer, make the most of the remaining sunny days to work on your
tan and laze. You have the rest of the year to be pallid and
productive. Here's how to rock your sunbathing style of choice,
before summer passes you by with a few custom looks to fit your
current locale. All the pieces are priced less than $50 with extra
discounts to sweeten the pot.
Gotta stock up on new lotions and potions? Why
not score a freebie while you're at it?
The shelf life of most cosmetics is three to four
months. With that turn around, you're likely to buy cosmetics and
skin care several times a year, and it's not exactly the kind of
stuff you want to buy on consignment. Many popular skin care,
perfume, and makeup brands seldom have sales, so how can a frugal
beauty junkie get the most bang for the buck?
Gifts with purchase, of course! Here's why GWPs
are my favorite kind of deal:
Sure, your Gran was recently murdered and your
boyfriend's a vampire, but that doesn't mean you don't want to look
good. Here's how you can steal the beauty styles of the four
leading ladies of True Blood: Sookie, Tara, Maryann, and
Jessica.
Summertime is upon us: time for barbecues, beach
days, a slew of summer nuptials--and bad footwear. You shouldn't
have to sacrifice comfort for fashion, but there are ways to look
stylish in shorts. Put away the athletic shoes, keep your Tevas on
the trail, and for heaven's sake put down the Crocs.
Here's a guy's guide for summer footwear beyond
the flip flop, each for under $50.
This month, Lauren Conrad graces the cover of
Cosmo. Promoting her new book and fashion line for Kohl's, the
young socialite is all about California Chic. No matter what you
think of former Hills star, one thing is for sure: the girl has
great summer style.
Want to get that look without a full-time makeup
artist? Here's how to do it for a steal. I found money-saving deals
on top brand products that can give you this look. Then, if you
want the look for less, I offer alternatives for a song--the whole
look for around $30.
As a kid, I loved digging through my mom's makeup
and beauty products and giving myself "makeovers." I may have
looked like a clown afterward, but I did make a few observations.
There was always a bottle of Cetaphil
cleanser and a package of Coty Airspun powder on her
shelf.
When I got older (and my makeup less
clown-like...hopefully), I asked Mom to tell me why she always
bought these bargain products when the rest of her makeup was
Chanel and Bobbi Brown. She told me that her grandmother could
always make herself look flawless in a flash with a quick dusting
of Coty. And the Cetaphil had become a staple of her medicine
cabinet after her dermatologist claimed it was the best cleanser on
the market, period.
Through the years, I've found my own buried treasure at my local
drugstore. Avalon Organics Lavender cream keeps my face smooth and
soft without any chemicals. And Skin Musk, yes Skin Musk in the
cheesy early '90's packaging, is still the fragrance that makes
people ask what I'm wearing in elevators.
I got to wondering what other drugstore secrets my
beauty-conscious friends had in their bathrooms.
Frugal fashionistas, the very heartening trend of
designers doing guest lines for affordable stores continues. Check
out the world class styles you can find at suburban mall
prices.
Last week, I blogged about how the recession
is making many couples weigh their wedding day options. Their
choice: a traditional pricey wedding with all the trimmings, or a
quick, intimate elopement to save cash. For those of you who want
your wedding cake--and hope to eat it, too--here are a few tips and
deals that'll keep your big day from having a big price
tag.
A recent study suggested that the average wedding
costs upwards of $29,000. Even Jim and Pam of NBC's The Office
discussed a quickie courthouse wedding to save money and
trouble.
You know the recession is really hitting home when America's
favorite fictional couple are feeling the crunch. Now that jobs are
scarce and people are tightening their belts, is the traditional
wedding the next victim of the economic downturn?
